Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Croatia

Croatia — a country worth exploring

Croatia's Adriatic coastline stretches over 1,770 kilometres, dotted with more than 1,200 islands and islets — making it one of Europe's most rewarding destinations for a road trip on your own terms. From the ancient city walls of Dubrovnik to the cascading lakes of Plitvice Lakes National Park, the country packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a compact area. The drive from Zagreb to Split covers roughly 410 km, while Dubrovnik to Pula spans about 660 km, giving you a real sense of how much variety fits between those two points. Along the way, you can explore the Roman amphitheatre in Pula, wander the marble streets of Diocletian's Palace in Split, or take a ferry from Zadar to the car-free island of Silba. Coastal roads hug the shoreline with frequent pull-offs and scenic viewpoints, while inland routes wind through rolling hills and river valleys that are well suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Croatia's network of campsites is well developed, particularly along the coast, so finding a pitch with sea views is straightforward. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Croatia — a peer-to-peer approach that gives you more choice of vehicle, flexible pick-up locations, and often better value than traditional hire companies. Whether you want a compact campervan for island-hopping or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer tour, Croatia delivers.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in Croatia runs from May to October, with each month offering something different. June is ideal for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which fills the old town with open-air theatre and music from mid-July through late August. In September, the Šibenik International Children's Festival brings family-friendly performances to the Dalmatian coast. Shoulder months like May and early October mean quieter campsites, comfortable temperatures for driving, and lower hire rates through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform. Summer is peak season, so booking your motorhome early ensures the widest selection of vehicles and pick-up points across Croatia.

Campsites and road information in Croatia

Recommended campsites

Croatia offers a well-developed network of campsites stretching from the Istrian peninsula to the southern Dalmatian coast. Most coastal sites provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated pitches for both campervans and motorhomes. Inland options near national parks tend to be smaller and more peaceful, with basic facilities and direct access to hiking trails. Many Croatian campsites sit right on the waterfront, so you can step from your pitch onto a beach or harbour promenade.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Croatia

Croatia uses a modern motorway network with toll roads on major routes such as the A1 (Zagreb–Split) and A6 (Zagreb–Rijeka). Tolls are paid at booths by cash or card, and an electronic ENC system is also available. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed in a higher toll category, so costs are slightly higher. The general speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on open roads. Rest areas with fuel, toilets, and parking for larger vehicles appear regularly along the main corridors. Coastal roads can be narrow in places, so a campervan may be easier to manoeuvre on routes like the D8 Adriatic highway.

We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
