Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Netherlands

Netherlands — a country worth exploring

The Netherlands packs an extraordinary amount into its compact borders — over 35,000 kilometres of cycling paths weave through a landscape where roughly a quarter of the land sits below sea level, protected by an ingenious network of dykes and polders. From the flower fields of Keukenhof near Lisse to the historic windmills of Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the country rewards slow travel at every turn. Amsterdam to Maastricht is roughly 215 km, while the drive from Rotterdam to the Wadden Sea coast near Harlingen covers about 180 km, giving you a real sense of how varied the scenery becomes over relatively short distances. Along the way, you can explore the Hoge Veluwe National Park with its Van Gogh collection, wander the medieval streets of Utrecht, or follow the coastline through the dunes of North Holland. The flat terrain and well-maintained roads make the Netherlands particularly welcoming for campervan and motorhome travel — no mountain passes to navigate, and plenty of well-signposted routes designed for larger vehicles. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across the Netherlands, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to suit your group size and travel style. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to get on the road and discover a country where water, history, and wide-open skies are never far away.

Best time to visit

The Netherlands is a joy to explore from spring right through to autumn. April and May bring the famous tulip season, when Keukenhof Gardens near Lisse opens its doors and the Bloemencorso flower parade winds through the Bollenstreek region. Summer months offer long daylight hours ideal for campervan trips along the coast and through the Frisian Lakes. Campsites across the country are generally open from March to October, with the widest availability between June and September. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of April, May, or September often means more competitive pricing from local motorhome owners, along with quieter roads and campsites. Whenever you choose to visit, plan your route early to make the most of your time.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Netherlands

The Netherlands has no toll roads for standard vehicles, making motorhome travel straightforward and budget-friendly. Motorways (snelwegen) are well maintained and clearly signposted. The national speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h during the day (06:00–19:00) and 120 or 130 km/h at night, but vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 80 km/h on most roads and 90 km/h on motorways. Keep an eye out for electronic signs that display variable speed limits. Rest areas with facilities for larger vehicles appear regularly along major routes like the A1, A2, and A4. Low-emission zones (milieuzones) apply in several city centres, so check your vehicle's emission class before entering cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or Utrecht.

We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
