Norway's Atlantic Road, an 8.3-kilometre stretch of highway connecting islands across the open sea, has been voted one of the world's most extraordinary driving experiences. From the deep Sognefjord — the longest fjord in the country at 204 kilometres — to the dramatic peaks of the Lofoten archipelago, Norway rewards those who travel at their own pace. The distance from Bergen to Tromsø covers roughly 1,600 km by road, passing through landscapes that shift from lush western fjords to the vast Arctic tundra of the north. Along the way, you can stop at Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) for a clifftop view 604 metres above Lysefjord, explore the colourful wooden wharves of Bryggen in Bergen, or chase the midnight sun beyond the Arctic Circle. Norway's well-maintained roads and generous freedom-to-roam laws make it particularly well suited to campervan and motorhome travel. From Oslo to the North Cape, the journey stretches over 2,100 km, offering countless wild camping spots and scenic rest areas with facilities. Whether you prefer coastal routes or mountain passes, a campervan gives you the flexibility to linger where the scenery calls. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Norway, choosing from a wide range of vehicles — from compact campervans ideal for narrow fjord roads to larger motorhomes with all the comforts of home. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and often more affordable.
The best time to hire a campervan in Norway depends on what you want to experience. June to August brings the midnight sun north of the Arctic Circle and access to highland routes like Trollstigen, which typically opens in late May. The Bergen International Festival in May and June is a wonderful reason to begin your trip on the west coast. September and October reward travellers with autumn colours and the return of the Northern Lights around Tromsø. Shoulder months offer quieter campsites and more availability. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can often find competitive rates outside peak summer, making a Norwegian motorhome adventure accessible year-round.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 250 km route loops from Bergen through Hardangerfjord and past the Vøringsfossen waterfall. Allow 3–6 days to explore orchard-lined villages like Ulvik and Eidfjord. Well suited to campervans, with plenty of scenic rest stops along the way.
Covering 280 km across Norway's Lofoten archipelago, this route links Svolvær to the fishing village of Å. Give yourself 3–6 days to hike, kayak, and photograph white-sand beaches. Compact campervans handle the narrow island roads with ease.
A 450 km coastal journey through western Norway, passing Preikestolen and the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund. Plan 5–8 days and include ferry crossings over Sognefjord. Motorhomes and campervans are both welcome on the well-serviced ferries.
This 400 km circuit in central Norway takes in Geirangerfjord, the Trollstigen mountain road, and the town of Åndalsnes. Over 5–8 days you can enjoy hairpin bends and fjord-side campsites. Check seasonal road openings before setting off in a motorhome.
At 700 km, this route crosses Arctic Norway from Tromsø to Nordkapp, Europe's northernmost point. Allow 7–11 days to spot reindeer, visit Alta's rock carvings, and experience the midnight sun. Campsites along the E6 cater well to larger vehicles.
A 600 km loop from Oslo through Kristiansand and along the Telemark Canal before returning via Kongsberg. Over 7–15 days, enjoy sandy southern beaches and forested inland valleys. Norway's southern roads are wide and comfortable for motorhomes of all sizes.

Norway offers a wide variety of campsites, from fjord-side pitches in the west to Arctic coastal spots in the far north. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, and waste disposal for both campervans and motorhomes. Many also feature heated sanitary blocks with showers and toilets, laundry facilities, and kitchen areas. Norway's freedom-to-roam tradition means wild camping is also permitted, but dedicated campsites give you reliable services and a chance to recharge between drives.
Norway has no general motorway toll system, but many roads, bridges, and tunnels charge tolls collected automatically via the AutoPASS system. If your motorhome is registered abroad, tolls are invoiced afterwards. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,500 kg are generally 80 km/h on main roads and 60 km/h in built-up areas — always check signage as limits vary. Mountain passes such as Trollstigen and roads in northern Norway may close seasonally. Rest areas along national tourist routes are well equipped, often with toilets and waste disposal points suitable for campervans and motorhomes.
