France's Route Nationale 7 once carried holidaymakers over 1,000 km from Paris to the Mediterranean, and today the country remains one of Europe's most rewarding destinations for a road trip. From the chalk cliffs of Étretat on the Normandy coast to the lavender plateaux of Valensole in Provence, France offers an extraordinary range of landscapes within easy driving distance of one another. Paris to Strasbourg is roughly 490 km through rolling countryside, while the Atlantic coast from Nantes to Biarritz stretches about 450 km past sandy beaches, pine forests and tidal estuaries. Mountain passes in the Alps and Pyrenees add drama for confident drivers, and the well-maintained autoroute network makes longer journeys comfortable in a motorhome. Smaller départementale roads wind through vineyard villages in Alsace, sunflower fields in the Dordogne and hilltop towns across Occitanie — ideal territory for a campervan at a leisurely pace. France also has one of Europe's densest campsite networks, with thousands of sites offering full hook-ups and services for every vehicle size. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners right across France, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles to match your route, your group and your budget.
France is wonderful to explore from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring warm days and quieter roads, perfect for a campervan tour of Provence before the famous Festival d'Avignon fills the city each July. September and October are ideal for wine-harvest season in Bordeaux and Alsace, when campsites remain open and temperatures are comfortable for touring. Summer is the most popular period, so booking your motorhome hire on Yescapa early gives you the best choice of vehicles and competitive peer-to-peer pricing from local owners across France.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

France boasts one of Europe's largest campsite networks, with options ranging from beachside parks on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts to mountain sites in the Alps and rural retreats in the Dordogne. Most sites offer dedicated motorhome and campervan pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal and modern shower blocks. Many also feature swimming pools, on-site shops and Wi-Fi, making extended stays comfortable for families and couples alike.
France has an extensive autoroute network, and most motorways are toll roads operated by private companies. You pay at péage barriers by card or cash, and a télépéage tag lets you pass through dedicated lanes without stopping. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on autoroutes and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly along major routes. Height barriers at some car parks and petrol stations can restrict larger vehicles, so plan fuel stops in advance.
