Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Germany

Germany — a country worth exploring

Germany's Autobahn network stretches over 13,000 kilometres, making it one of the most extensive motorway systems in Europe and a dream for anyone exploring by campervan or motorhome. From the sandy shores of the Baltic Sea to the snow-dusted peaks of the Bavarian Alps, the country offers an extraordinary range of landscapes within a single trip. The distance from Hamburg in the north to Munich in the south is roughly 790 km, while a drive from Cologne to Berlin covers about 575 km — both routes passing through rolling farmland, river valleys, and historic cities. Landmarks such as Neuschwanstein Castle, the Brandenburg Gate, the Cologne Cathedral, and the Romantic Rhine Valley each tell a different chapter of Germany's story. Narrow vineyard roads along the Moselle, wide lakeside paths around Lake Constance, and winding alpine passes in the Berchtesgaden region all reward those who travel at their own pace. Campervans handle the tighter village roads with ease, while larger motorhomes are well catered for on the country's generous network of Stellplätze — dedicated overnight parking areas found in almost every town. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire directly from local owners across Germany, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles to match your route, group size, and budget.

Best time to visit

Germany's campervan season runs strong from May to October, with June to September offering the warmest weather and longest daylight hours. If you time your trip for late September, you can experience Munich's Oktoberfest, the world's largest folk festival, while a visit in December opens up famous Christmas markets in Nuremberg and Dresden. Spring and early autumn are ideal for quieter roads and more available pitches at popular campsites. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices outside peak summer months, and local owners can share insider tips on the best seasonal routes across Germany.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Germany

Germany's Autobahn is toll-free for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes, so most campervans and motorhomes travel without charge. Some sections famously have no speed limit for cars, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 80 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes should keep to 130 km/h as the recommended limit. Rest areas with services (Raststätten) appear every 40–60 km, and many include dedicated motorhome service points for fresh water and waste disposal. Environmental zones (Umweltzonen) in most city centres require a green emissions sticker, so check your vehicle's rating before entering urban areas.

We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
