Austria's Grossglockner High Alpine Road climbs to 2,504 metres, making it one of Europe's most spectacular mountain passes and a bucket-list drive for anyone touring by campervan. From the baroque grandeur of Salzburg to the imperial palaces of Vienna, the country packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a compact area — Vienna to Innsbruck is roughly 470 km, while Salzburg to Graz covers about 280 km. Along the way you can explore the mirror-still lakes of the Salzkammergut, cycle the Danube Trail through the Wachau Valley's terraced vineyards, or hike beneath the jagged peaks of the Dachstein massif. Austria's well-maintained road network and generous provision of motorhome service areas make it particularly rewarding for touring by road. Mountain passes are clearly signposted, and most valleys offer campsites with full hook-ups and fresh-water facilities. Whether you fancy a lakeside pitch in Carinthia or a forest clearing in the Bregenzerwald, there is space to park up and settle in. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Austria, choosing from a wide variety of vehicle types and sizes to suit your trip. It is a flexible, personal way to hit the road — and a great excuse to let the Alps set the pace.
Austria's campervan season runs from May to October, with July and August offering the warmest weather and full access to high-altitude passes like the Grossglockner. If you prefer quieter roads, June and September are ideal — campsites across the Salzkammergut and Carinthia are open, and you can catch events such as the Salzburg Festival in July and August or the Styrian Autumn food festival from September. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices outside peak months, so planning a trip in late spring or early autumn can be especially good value.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 400 km loop through Tyrol takes 5–8 days, winding from Innsbruck over the Brenner Pass and into the Stubai Valley. Stop at the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens and the medieval old town of Hall in Tirol. Well-suited to both campervans and motorhomes, with alpine campsites throughout.
Cover 350 km in 5–8 days exploring Austria's lake district. Start in Salzburg, then head to Wolfgangsee, Hallstatt, and the Dachstein Ice Caves. Lakeside campsites welcome campervans and offer electric hook-ups. The route follows well-maintained roads through gentle valleys.
A relaxed 180 km drive over 3–6 days through Austria's Wachau Valley. Visit the abbey at Melk, the wine town of Dürnstein, and Krems an der Donau. Flat riverside roads are ideal for larger motorhomes, and vineyards line the route on both sides.
This 250 km circuit over 3–6 days links the warm lakes of southern Austria. Swim at Wörthersee, explore Millstätter See, and visit the hilltop castle at Hochosterwitz. Campervan-friendly campsites sit right on the lakeshores, with mountain views at every turn.
Stretch 550 km across Austria in 7–11 days, driving from Bregenz on Lake Constance to Vienna. Pass through the Arlberg region, Innsbruck, and Salzburg before reaching the capital. Motorhome service points are spaced regularly along the motorway corridor.
A 700 km adventure over 10–15 days circling Austria's finest alpine scenery. Drive the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, loop through the Zillertal, and pause at Zell am See. Best suited to campervans under 3.5 tonnes on the higher passes. Plan stops at well-equipped mountain campsites.

Austria offers a superb range of campsites spread from the Tyrolean Alps to the Danube lowlands. Whether you are travelling in a compact campervan or a full-size motorhome, you will find pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh-water points, and modern shower and toilet blocks. Many sites in Austria sit beside lakes or rivers, giving you direct access to swimming, fishing, and cycling trails right from your pitch.
Austria requires a toll vignette for all vehicles using its motorways and expressways. You can purchase a digital vignette online or at petrol stations. Certain alpine tunnels and roads, such as the Brenner motorway and the Arlberg tunnel, carry separate tolls. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes use the GO-Box system instead. Speed limits on motorways are 130 km/h for cars, but campervans and motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well distributed along major routes.

Fabio was a really great guest and left the camper van in perfect condition. He enjoyed His adventure exploring Ireland and we were delighted he hired one of our campervans.
We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
