Iceland offers a wide network of campsites spread from the capital region to remote coastal and highland areas. Most sites open between June and September and provide basic facilities such as toilets, showers, and waste disposal for campervans and motorhomes. Many also have electric hook-ups and cooking shelters. The Camping Card scheme covers dozens of sites across Iceland, which can help keep costs down on longer trips.
Iceland has no motorway toll system, so all roads are free to use. The main Ring Road (Route 1) is mostly paved and suitable for campervans and motorhomes, with a general speed limit of 90 km/h on rural stretches and 50 km/h in towns. Gravel sections still exist in parts of the east and north, so reduce speed to protect your vehicle. F-roads (highland tracks) are restricted to 4×4 vehicles and are closed outside summer — standard campervans and motorhomes are not permitted on them. Fuel stations can be over 100 km apart in remote areas, so plan your stops carefully.
