Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Slovenia

Slovenia — a country worth exploring

Slovenia packs an extraordinary amount of variety into just 20,273 square kilometres, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore by road. From the Julian Alps in the north-west to the short but beautiful 46-kilometre Adriatic coastline near Piran, the landscape shifts constantly. Ljubljana, the compact capital, sits roughly 120 km from Lake Bled, whose island church has drawn visitors for centuries, while the Škocjan Caves — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — lie about 80 km to the south-west. The Vršič Pass, the highest road crossing in the Julian Alps at 1,611 metres, is a memorable drive for anyone comfortable behind the wheel of a campervan. Further east, the rolling hills of the Štajerska wine region and the thermal springs around Ptuj offer a completely different pace. Slovenia's well-maintained roads and manageable distances mean you can cross the country in a few hours, yet there is enough to fill weeks of exploration. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across Slovenia, choosing from a range of vehicle types to suit your group and your route. Whether you are winding through alpine valleys or parking up beside a vineyard, the peer-to-peer model keeps things flexible and personal.

Best time to visit

Slovenia is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm days ideal for driving alpine routes like the Vršič Pass, which is typically clear of snow by then. Summer is peak season, and events such as the Ljubljana Festival in July and August fill the capital with open-air concerts and theatre. For a quieter trip, September and October reward you with golden foliage across the wine regions and comfortable temperatures for hiking. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform can be especially good value outside July and August, when more vehicles tend to be available and owners often set lower daily rates. Book a few weeks ahead for summer to secure your preferred motorhome.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Slovenia

Slovenia uses a vignette system for its motorways. You need to purchase an e-vignette online or at petrol stations before driving on any avtocesta (motorway). Weekly, monthly, and annual options are available. The speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 80 km/h. On regional roads the limit is generally 90 km/h, and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Rest areas with facilities are well spaced along the A1 and A2 corridors. Larger vehicles should note height restrictions on some alpine tunnels and older town centres.
