Portugal's coastline stretches over 1,790 kilometres from the surf beaches of the Algarve to the wild Atlantic shores of the Minho, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore by road. From Lisbon, the capital, it is roughly 300 km south to Faro and about 370 km north to Porto, so you can cover a remarkable variety of landscapes in a single trip. Along the way, you might visit the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra, the university city of Coimbra, the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, or the ancient megaliths near Évora. Coastal roads wind past dramatic cliffs at Cabo da Roca — mainland Europe's most westerly point — while inland routes climb through the granite peaks of Serra da Estrela, Portugal's highest mountain range. Many of these roads are well suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes, with good rest areas and well-signposted routes throughout the country. Portugal also benefits from a mild climate that extends the touring season well beyond the summer months, giving you more flexibility when planning your itinerary. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based across Portugal, choosing from a wide range of vehicle types and sizes to match your travel style and budget.
Portugal is a wonderful destination for a campervan trip from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring warm, settled weather ideal for exploring the Algarve coast or the Douro Valley before the busiest weeks arrive. Summer is peak season, so booking your hire early through Yescapa gives you access to competitive peer-to-peer prices. September and October are excellent for festivals such as the Festa das Vindimas grape harvest celebrations across the Douro region. Campsites throughout Portugal generally remain open from March to November, with many in the south operating year-round.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 350 km route winds from Porto into the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, passing Peso da Régua and Pinhão before climbing into the remote highlands of Trás-os-Montes. Allow 5–8 days to enjoy wine tastings and the natural parks around Bragança. Well suited to campervans.
Covering 400 km along Portugal's Silver Coast, this route links Peniche and Nazaré with the historic university city of Coimbra and the forests of Leiria. Over 5–8 days you can surf, explore monasteries, and find well-equipped campsites along the way. Great for motorhomes and campervans alike.
A 600 km journey from Faro in the south to Porto in the north, taking in the plains of the Alentejo, Lisbon's coastal surrounds, and the lush Minho region. Plan 7–11 days to experience the full diversity of Portugal. Campsites are plentiful along the route for both campervans and motorhomes.
Explore 550 km of northern Portugal over 7–15 days, from Porto through Guimarães and Peneda-Gerês National Park to the riverside town of Valença on the Spanish border. Mountain roads reward campervan travellers with quiet valleys and traditional villages.
A 200 km route along Portugal's southern coast, from Lagos to Tavira, with stops at Benagil sea caves and the Ria Formosa lagoon. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy golden beaches and fresh seafood. Coastal campsites offer full hook-ups for motorhomes.
This 250 km loop through the Alentejo takes you from Évora's Roman temple to the marble town of Vila Viçosa and the fortified hilltop of Monsaraz. Over 3–6 days, enjoy wide-open plains, cork oak forests, and peaceful rural campsites ideal for campervans.

Portugal offers a fine selection of campsites spread from the southern Algarve coast to the green valleys of the north. Many sites provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated pitches for both campervans and motorhomes. Whether you prefer a beachside spot with ocean views or a mountain retreat surrounded by forest, you will find well-maintained facilities across the country. Several sites also welcome families with play areas, swimming pools, and on-site restaurants.
Portugal's motorway network (autoestradas) is extensive and well maintained. Most major routes, including the A1 between Lisbon and Porto, are tolled. Some toll sections use electronic-only collection, so you will need a pre-paid toll device or register your vehicle online via the Via Verde system. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are typically 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles appear regularly along main routes. Be aware that some older town centres have narrow streets, so plan your route in advance when driving a motorhome.
