Switzerland packs 48 peaks above 4,000 metres into a country roughly 350 km wide, making it one of the most altitude-dense nations on Earth. From the shores of Lake Geneva in the west to the Rhine Valley in the east, the landscape shifts between rolling farmland, deep glacial valleys, and high alpine passes — all connected by well-maintained roads that are a joy to drive. The Gotthard Pass, open from June to October, has linked northern and southern Switzerland since the 13th century and remains a spectacular route for motorhome travellers. Bern to Lucerne is just 110 km, yet the scenery changes dramatically along the way, while Zurich to Lugano covers around 210 km and crosses from German-speaking to Italian-speaking Switzerland. Landmarks such as the Jet d'Eau in Geneva, the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne, the Matterhorn above Zermatt, and the Aletsch Glacier — the largest in the Alps — give you a reason to stop at every turn. Campervan travel suits Switzerland perfectly: distances are short, campsites are well equipped, and the road network reaches even remote valleys. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the country, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style. Whether you are winding through the Jura hills or descending into Ticino's palm-lined lakeside towns, Switzerland rewards those who take the scenic route.
The best time to hire a campervan in Switzerland runs from May to October, when alpine passes are open and campsites operate at full capacity. June is ideal for wildflower meadows and the Montreux Jazz Festival, held lakeside each summer since 1967. July and August bring warm days perfect for swimming in Swiss lakes, while September and early October offer golden larch forests and quieter roads. Book ahead for peak summer months to secure the best choice of vehicles. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes shoulder-season trips in May or October particularly good value, and you can still enjoy Switzerland's lower-altitude routes comfortably.

Switzerland offers a well-organised network of campsites spread from the lakeshores of Ticino to the alpine valleys of the Bernese Oberland. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, and waste disposal suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Many are open from April to October, with a handful operating year-round in lower-altitude areas. Facilities typically include hot showers, laundry rooms, and on-site shops, and several sites sit within walking distance of public transport links.
Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (currently €40) for all vehicles using its national motorways, valid from December to January of the following year. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes pay distance-based tolls instead and must use an electronic box. The general speed limit on motorways is 120 km/h, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h. Mountain passes such as the Susten, Grimsel, and Furka are seasonal and may have width or weight restrictions — always check signage before entering. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well distributed along major routes.
