Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Abruzzo

Abruzzo — a region worth exploring

Abruzzo is home to three national parks — Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga, Maiella, and Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise — making it one of the greenest regions in Europe, with roughly a third of its territory under environmental protection. The Adriatic coastline stretches for over 130 km, from Martinsicuro in the north to San Salvo in the south, offering long sandy beaches that give way to rolling hills and then dramatic mountain scenery within a short drive. From the coastal town of Pescara to the medieval centre of L'Aquila is just 105 km, yet the landscape shifts from sea level to peaks above 2,900 metres around the Corno Grande, the highest summit in the Apennines. The region's roads wind through the Campo Imperatore plateau — often called "Italy's little Tibet" — past the hilltop fortress of Rocca Calascio and along the shores of Lake Scanno, a heart-shaped lake nestled between beech forests. Abruzzo's compact size makes it ideal for campervan travel: you can move from beach to mountain in under two hours, and from Sulmona to Pescara is roughly 60 km through the Majella foothills. Motorhome-friendly service areas are well distributed along the main routes, and many smaller villages welcome touring vehicles. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Abruzzo, choosing from a range of vehicles to suit your group and your route.

Best time to visit

Abruzzo's coastal campsites open from April, and by May the Adriatic is warm enough for comfortable seaside stops. Summer brings the Festa di San Zopito in Loreto Aprutino each May and the Giostra Cavalleresca in Sulmona every July — both worth timing your trip around. From September through October, the mountain parks are quieter and the beech forests turn golden, making it a rewarding season for campervan touring inland. Winter opens up ski routes near Roccaraso, so Abruzzo genuinely works year-round. Book through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model and you'll often find more competitive hire rates outside peak summer, with local owners offering flexible pick-up arrangements.

The best road trips in Abruzzo

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Trabocchi Coast Trail

70 km 3–5 days

This 70 km route follows Abruzzo's Adriatic shore from Ortona to San Salvo, passing the iconic trabocchi fishing platforms. Ideal for a campervan, with beachside stops at Fossacesia Marina and Vasto. Allow 3–5 days to enjoy seafood and coastal sunsets.

The Medieval Villages Circuit

120 km 3–6 days

A 120 km loop through Abruzzo's hilltop borghi, linking Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castel del Monte, and Navelli. Roads are narrow in places, so a compact campervan works best. Spend 3–6 days exploring stone alleyways and saffron fields.

The Gran Sasso Ring

200 km 5–8 days

Circle the highest Apennine massif on this 200 km Abruzzo route. Drive across the Campo Imperatore plateau, visit Rocca Calascio fortress, and stop at L'Aquila. A motorhome handles the well-surfaced roads comfortably over 5–8 days.

Coast to Maiella Discovery

160 km 5–8 days

Covering 160 km from Pescara's seafront to the heart of the Maiella National Park, this Abruzzo route passes through Caramanico Terme and the Orfento Valley. Allow 5–8 days; motorhome service areas are available in Sulmona.

The Three Parks Traverse

320 km 7–11 days

This 320 km route links Abruzzo's three national parks — Gran Sasso, Maiella, and Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. Pass through Scanno, Pescasseroli, and Barrea. A campervan gives flexibility for 7–11 days of mountain lakes and forest trails.

The Grand Abruzzo Tour

500 km 10–15 days

A comprehensive 500 km loop taking in the full breadth of Abruzzo — from the Adriatic at Giulianova to the mountain heart at Roccaraso, then north to L'Aquila and back to the coast. Suits any motorhome or campervan over 10–15 days.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Abruzzo

Abruzzo's main motorways are the A14 (Adriatic coast) and the A24/A25 connecting Rome to Pescara and L'Aquila. Tolls apply on all three and are paid at exit barriers by card or cash — budget roughly €10–€15 for a full crossing. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as a higher toll category and must observe a 100 km/h limit on motorways and 80 km/h on secondary roads. The A24 and A25 include long tunnels through the Apennines, so check your vehicle height before setting off. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly along the A14.
