Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Alentejo

Alentejo — a region worth exploring

Alentejo stretches across roughly a third of Portugal's landmass yet holds barely five per cent of its population, making it one of western Europe's least crowded regions for a road trip. From the Roman Temple of Évora — a UNESCO World Heritage city — to the vast Alqueva reservoir, the largest artificial lake in Europe, there is an extraordinary range of landscapes to discover at your own pace. The drive from Évora south to the surf beaches of Zambujeira do Mar covers around 180 km, while heading east from Beja to the Spanish border town of Serpa is a gentle 30 km through rolling cork-oak plains. Along the way you can explore the marble quarries of Estremoz, the medieval fortress at Marvão perched 860 metres above sea level, and the wild coastline of the Rota Vicentina trail network. Roads here are generally quiet and well-surfaced, with long straight stretches through golden wheat fields and olive groves — ideal conditions for both campervans and larger motorhomes. Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across the Alentejo, so you can hire a campervan from someone who knows the region and can share tips on the best overnight spots, seasonal markets, and lesser-known routes. With a peer-to-peer model, you benefit from a wider choice of vehicles at a range of price points, whether you are planning a short coastal escape or a full circuit of this remarkable region.

Best time to visit

The Alentejo is a year-round destination, though spring (March to May) is especially rewarding when wildflowers blanket the plains and temperatures sit comfortably in the low twenties. The Festival Sete Sóis Sete Luas brings music and arts to towns across the Alentejo each July and August, while the Feira de São João in Évora every late June offers traditional crafts and local gastronomy. Autumn is perfect for wine-harvest experiences along the Alentejo wine route. Booking through Yescapa during the quieter months often means more competitive peer-to-peer pricing and greater vehicle availability, so it is worth planning a campervan trip outside peak summer if your schedule allows.

Portugal's motorways in the Alentejo, including the A2 (Lisbon–Algarve) and A6 (Lisbon–Évora–Spain), use an electronic toll system. Many sections are toll-only with no booths, so you will need a pre-purchased toll device or register your vehicle online before travelling. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads.
