The Algarve stretches across 155 kilometres of Portugal's southern coastline, where over 100 beaches sit between sandstone cliffs and calm Atlantic waters — more than any other region of comparable size in Europe. From the dramatic rock formations at Ponta da Piedade near Lagos to the peaceful lagoons of the Ria Formosa Natural Park east of Faro, the landscape shifts constantly. The distance from Sagres at the western tip to Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border is roughly 170 km, making it easy to cover in a campervan at a relaxed pace. Inland, the Serra de Monchique rises to 902 metres, offering cooler temperatures and forested trails that contrast with the busy coastal strip. Towns like Tavira, Silves, and Albufeira each have their own character, from Moorish architecture to lively markets. Roads throughout the Algarve are well-maintained and largely flat along the coast, which suits both campervans and motorhomes of all sizes. Yescapa connects you directly with local vehicle owners across the region, so you can hire a motorhome in Faro or pick up a campervan closer to Lagos — whatever fits your route. With peer-to-peer choice and competitive pricing, it is a practical way to explore the Algarve on your own terms.
The Algarve enjoys a long season, with warm weather from April right through to October. Spring is ideal for a campervan trip — wildflowers cover the hills and campsites have plenty of availability. Summer brings the Festival Med in Loulé each June, a world music event well worth timing your visit around. Autumn stays mild and is perfect for quieter coastal drives. Even winter sees average temperatures around 16°C, making the Algarve one of Europe's most comfortable year-round destinations. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means better rates outside peak months, and you will find a wider selection of motorhomes and campervans to hire during spring and autumn.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 90 km loop from Faro explores the Ria Formosa Natural Park, passing through Olhão's waterfront market and the island beaches of Tavira. Ideal for campervans, with several well-equipped campsites along the lagoon. Allow 3–5 days to enjoy the birdwatching and seafood.
Covering 350 km, this route heads north from Sagres along the Algarve's wild west coast through Aljezur and into the Alentejo. Expect dramatic cliffs, uncrowded surf beaches, and the Vicentine Coast Natural Park. A motorhome-friendly route with 5–8 days recommended.
A 400 km east-to-west journey from Vila Real de Santo António to Sagres, taking in Tavira, Faro, Albufeira, and Lagos. This route covers the full breadth of the Algarve coastline. Allow 5–8 days and enjoy well-maintained roads suited to both campervans and motorhomes.
This 550 km route links the Algarve coast with the rolling plains of the Alentejo, passing through Silves, Monchique, and up to Beja and Évora. A campervan is perfect for the quieter inland roads. Plan 7–11 days to explore cork forests, historic towns, and local vineyards.
At 600 km over 10–15 days, this circuit loops from Faro through Lagos, up the west coast to Odemira, inland to Mértola, and back along the Guadiana River. It covers the full diversity of the Algarve and southern Alentejo — coast, mountains, and river valleys.
A compact 120 km route between Albufeira and Lagos, hugging the Algarve's famous golden cliffs. Stop at Carvoeiro, Benagil sea cave viewpoint, and Praia da Marinha. Motorhome parking is available at most beaches. A relaxed 3–6 day trip with short daily drives.

The Algarve offers a good spread of campsites, from coastal parks with ocean views to quieter inland spots near the Serra de Monchique. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated pitches for both campervans and motorhomes. Many also have swimming pools, laundry facilities, and on-site shops. Booking ahead is worthwhile during summer, though spring and autumn offer easy availability across the Algarve.
The Algarve's main motorway, the A22 (Via do Infante), runs east–west across the region and uses an electronic toll system. You will need to register your vehicle or hire a toll device at the border or airport — there are no physical toll booths. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads. The older EN125 runs parallel to the A22 and is toll-free, though slower. Rest areas along the A22 are well spaced, and most have facilities suitable for larger vehicles. Watch for height restrictions in some older town centres.
