Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Aosta Valley

Aosta Valley — a region worth exploring

Valle d'Aosta is Italy's smallest region, yet it holds some of Europe's tallest peaks — Mont Blanc (4,808 m), the Matterhorn, and Monte Rosa all frame its borders. The region stretches roughly 80 km from the town of Pont-Saint-Martin in the east to Courmayeur in the west, with the central city of Aosta — founded by the Romans in 25 BC — sitting at its heart. You can still walk through the Arch of Augustus and the Roman Theatre there today. Beyond the valley floor, side valleys branch out towards the Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy's oldest national park, where ibex and chamois roam freely above 2,000 m. Driving from Aosta to the foot of the Matterhorn at Breuil-Cervinia covers around 50 km of well-maintained mountain road, passing medieval towers and fortified castles such as Fénis Castle and Issogne Castle along the way. The compact distances make Valle d'Aosta ideal for a campervan trip — you can explore a different valley each day without long transfers. Motorhome travellers will find well-equipped stopovers in most towns, and the region's scenic routes reward a slower pace. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across northern Italy, choosing from a wide range of vehicle types to suit the mountain roads and alpine campsites that define this remarkable corner of the Alps.

Best time to visit

June to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Valle d'Aosta, when mountain passes are open and campsites operate at full capacity. The Fête de la Musique in Aosta each June fills the old town with live performances, while the Bataille de Reines — a traditional cow-fighting tournament — draws crowds in October. Shoulder months like May and early October offer quieter roads and lower hire rates through Yescapa's peer-to-peer owners. Winter brings world-class skiing, though many higher-altitude roads close to larger vehicles. Book early for July and August to secure the best choice of motorhome or campervan.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Aosta Valley

Valle d'Aosta is served by the A5 motorway, which connects Turin to the Mont Blanc Tunnel and on into France. Tolls apply on the A5 and can be paid by card or cash at barrier stations. The Mont Blanc Tunnel itself carries a separate toll — around €50 one way for a motorhome under 3.5 tonnes. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on dual carriageways and 100 km/h on motorways. Many regional roads are single-carriageway mountain routes with tight bends, so allow extra time if you are driving a larger vehicle. Rest areas with motorhome service points are available along the A5.
