Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Apulia

Apulia — a region worth exploring

Puglia stretches over 800 kilometres of coastline along Italy's southeastern heel, making it one of the longest coastal regions in the country. From the limestone cliffs of the Gargano Peninsula in the north to the sandy shores of the Salento in the south, the landscape shifts constantly — olive groves, dry-stone walls, and whitewashed towns appear around every bend. The iconic trulli houses of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are unlike anything else in Europe, while the Baroque old town of Lecce has earned the city the nickname "Florence of the South." The drive from Bari to Lecce covers roughly 150 km along well-maintained roads, and from Vieste on the Gargano coast down to Gallipoli in the Salento it is approximately 400 km — a route that reveals the full variety of Puglia. The terrain is largely flat or gently rolling, which makes it particularly welcoming for motorhome and campervan travel, with wide roads and plenty of space to pull over and enjoy the view. Coastal campsites are plentiful, and many smaller towns offer dedicated parking areas for larger vehicles. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Puglia, choosing from a range of vehicles to suit your group and your route. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and often more affordable than traditional hire companies.

Best time to visit

Puglia enjoys a long travel season, with May through October offering warm, dry conditions ideal for campervan touring. The Festa di San Nicola in Bari each May draws large crowds with processions and fireworks, while the Notte della Taranta festival in Melpignano every August celebrates traditional Salentine music and dance. Summer is peak season, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa is a smart move — peer-to-peer pricing often gives you better value than standard hire. Spring and early autumn are quieter, with comfortable temperatures for exploring Puglia's countryside and coast at a relaxed pace.

Puglia's main motorway is the A14, which runs along the Adriatic coast from the north down to Bari and connects to the A16 heading west. Tolls apply on these routes and can be paid by cash or card at toll booths. For motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes, the speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h, while on dual carriageways it drops to 80 km/h.
