Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Asturias

Asturias — a region worth exploring

Asturias is the only region in Spain where the mountains meet the sea without a single kilometre of motorway toll, making it a genuinely free-roaming destination for campervan and motorhome travellers. The Picos de Europa National Park rises to 2,648 metres at Torre de Cerredo, yet sits barely 25 km from the Cantabrian coast, giving you dramatic altitude changes in a short drive. Along the coastline, the Playa de Gulpiyuri — a tiny inland beach fed by seawater through underground channels — is one of Spain's most unusual natural landmarks. From the regional capital Oviedo to the port town of Gijón is just 30 km, while the fishing village of Cudillero lies roughly 60 km west of Gijón, offering colourful harbourside streets that tumble down a steep hillside. Asturias also holds a remarkable collection of pre-Romanesque churches, including Santa María del Naranco and San Julián de los Prados, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The narrow coastal and mountain roads reward smaller campervans with easy access to quieter spots, though wider routes through the river valleys suit motorhomes comfortably. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Asturias, choosing from a range of vehicles that match the terrain you want to explore — whether that is a compact campervan for winding cliff roads or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer family trip through the valleys.

Best time to visit

Asturias enjoys a green, mild climate year-round, so every season has something to offer. June to September brings the warmest weather and the liveliest festivals — the Descenso Internacional del Sella, a famous canoe race held each August, draws thousands to the Sella River. Spring and autumn are ideal for quieter campervan trips through the Picos de Europa, with fewer visitors and excellent hiking conditions. Winter opens up cosy coastal drives and the chance to see snow-capped peaks from sea level. Booking through Yescapa in the shoulder months often means better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners across Asturias, so it is well worth planning ahead.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Asturias

Asturias has no toll roads, so you can travel the entire region without paying a single motorway charge. The main route is the A-8 (Autovía del Cantábrico), which runs along the coast and connects the major towns. The general speed limit on motorways in Spain is 120 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. Mountain roads in the Picos de Europa can be narrow and winding, so a campervan is often more practical than a larger motorhome in those areas. Rest areas with basic facilities are well spaced along the A-8.
