Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Atlantic

Atlantic — a region worth exploring

France's Atlantic coast stretches over 720 kilometres from the marshlands of the Marais Poitevin down to the surf beaches of Biarritz, linking some of the country's most distinctive landscapes along the way. The Île de Ré, connected to La Rochelle by a 2.9-kilometre bridge, offers salt marshes and whitewashed villages ideal for slow-paced exploration. Further south, the Dune of Pilat near Arcachon rises to roughly 110 metres — the tallest sand dune in Europe — and overlooks the vast Landes pine forest that runs for nearly 100 kilometres to the Basque Country. From Royan to Bayonne is approximately 280 kilometres, a drive that takes you past oyster ports, vineyard-covered hillsides along the Gironde Estuary, and long Atlantic surf breaks. The region suits both campervans and motorhomes, with well-maintained coastal roads and plentiful aires de service for overnight stops. Bordeaux, the region's largest city, sits about 60 kilometres inland from the coast and serves as a natural starting point for trips heading north towards Cognac or south towards the Pays Basque. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across the Atlantic coast, giving you a wider choice of vehicles and flexible pick-up locations to match your route.

Best time to visit

The Atlantic coast comes alive from May to October, when daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 18 °C and 28 °C and campsites operate at full capacity. The Fêtes de Bayonne in late July draws over a million visitors for five days of music and Basque culture, while the Francofolies music festival in La Rochelle each July is a highlight for live-music fans. Booking a campervan through Yescapa outside peak July–August lets you enjoy quieter roads and more competitive hire prices from local owners. Spring and early autumn are particularly rewarding for cycling the Vélodyssée or exploring the Médoc vineyards without the summer crowds.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Atlantic

France's Atlantic motorways — primarily the A10 towards Bordeaux and the A63 south to Bayonne — are toll roads. You can pay at péage booths by card or cash, or use a télépéage transponder for quicker passage. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly along the A10 and A63, making long drives manageable. Watch for height barriers at some older toll plazas if your vehicle exceeds 3 metres.
