Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Avesnois

Avesnois — a region worth exploring

Avesnois is home to the Parc Naturel Régional de l'Avesnois, one of France's most distinctive regional nature parks, covering over 1,300 square kilometres of rolling bocage countryside in the far south-east of the Hauts-de-France region. The landscape here is defined by hedgerow-lined pastures, dense forests, and gentle river valleys — a refreshing contrast to the flat plains further north. From the fortified town of Le Quesnoy, with its remarkably intact Vauban ramparts, to the Forêt de Mormal — the largest woodland in northern France at roughly 9,000 hectares — there is plenty of ground to cover at your own pace. The distance from Avesnes-sur-Helpe to Maroilles, famed for its pungent monastery cheese, is just 12 km, while Le Quesnoy to Fourmies stretches around 45 km through some of the region's most scenic lanes. Waterways such as the Helpe Majeure and Helpe Mineure wind through the bocage, and the old railway line turned cycling path, the Voie Verte de l'Avesnois, offers a superb companion route for those exploring by campervan or motorhome. Narrow country roads and compact villages reward smaller vehicles, though well-maintained departmental roads keep larger motorhomes comfortable too. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the wider Nord and Hauts-de-France area, giving you the flexibility to pick up a vehicle nearby and set off into the Avesnois countryside without delay.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Avesnois, when the bocage hedgerows are lush and campsites around Val Joly lake are fully open. The Fête du Maroilles, held each October in the village of Maroilles, is well worth timing your visit around if you enjoy regional food traditions. Summer brings the longest days for exploring the Forêt de Mormal and cycling the Voie Verte. Spring and early autumn are quieter, and through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model you can often find more competitive hire rates outside peak months. Book ahead for July and August to secure the best choice of motorhome or campervan from local owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Avesnois

Avesnois sits away from major motorways, which keeps traffic light and the pace relaxed. The A2/E19 autoroute runs to the west, connecting Valenciennes to Paris, and tolls apply on most autoroute sections — payable by card or cash at toll booths. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on autoroutes and 80 km/h on standard roads. Within the Avesnois itself, you will mostly travel on well-maintained D-roads that wind through bocage countryside. Some lanes are narrow, so keep an eye on vehicle width. Rest areas with motorhome service points can be found near Le Quesnoy and Avesnes-sur-Helpe.
