The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
The Azores archipelago stretches across 600 kilometres of the mid-Atlantic, comprising nine volcanic islands that together form one of Europe's most rewarding destinations for slow travel. On São Miguel, the largest island, you can drive from the steaming fumaroles of Furnas to the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades in under 90 minutes, passing tea plantations at Gorreana — the only commercial tea estate in Europe. Terceira's UNESCO-listed centre of Angra do Heroísmo offers colourful Baroque architecture, while Faial's Capelinhos volcano, which last erupted in 1958, adds a lunar landscape to the western group. From Horta on Faial to Madalena on Pico, the ferry crossing is just 30 minutes, opening up trails to the summit of Mount Pico at 2,351 metres — Portugal's highest peak. The islands' compact roads, mild year-round climate, and well-spaced viewpoints make them ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome at your own pace. Distances are manageable: São Miguel's full coastal loop is roughly 140 kilometres, so you can stop often without feeling rushed. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the Azores, choosing from a range of vehicles to suit your group size and travel style. Whether you want a compact campervan for island-hopping or a larger motorhome for a longer stay, the Azores reward curiosity at every turn.
The Azores enjoy a mild oceanic climate, making campervan travel comfortable from April through to October. June to September brings the warmest temperatures and the calmest seas — ideal for whale watching off Pico and swimming in natural rock pools. The Sanjoaninas festival in Terceira each June fills Angra do Heroísmo with live music, bullfights, and street parades, while the Holy Spirit festivals (Festas do Espírito Santo) run across all islands from May to September. Spring is particularly rewarding, with hydrangea-lined roads and fewer visitors. Book your Azores trip through Yescapa during the shoulder months of April or October for more competitive peer-to-peer hire rates and greater vehicle availability.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 120 km loop on São Miguel links the emerald crater lakes of Sete Cidades to the hot springs of Furnas, with stops at Lagoa do Fogo. Ideal for a campervan, the route offers well-placed viewpoints and compact roads suited to 3–6 days of relaxed Azores exploration.
Circle Terceira's 80 km coastline, taking in the UNESCO-listed streets of Angra do Heroísmo and the ancient Algar do Carvão lava tube. At 3–5 days, this Azores route suits a compact campervan and includes easy access to natural swimming pools at Biscoitos.
Covering roughly 200 km across three Azores islands linked by short ferry hops, this 5–8 day route takes you from Horta's marina to the vineyards of Pico and the fajãs of São Jorge. A motorhome gives extra comfort for overnight stops between crossings.
Traverse São Miguel from the eastern headland of Nordeste to the western tip at Mosteiros across 350 km of winding Azores roads. Over 5–8 days, visit Gorreana tea plantation, Ribeira Grande, and Sete Cidades. Campsites are well spaced for campervan or motorhome travellers.
This 450 km, 7–11 day Azores adventure connects Faial, Pico, São Jorge, and Graciosa by ferry. Highlights include the Capelinhos volcano, Mount Pico's summit trail, and Graciosa's Furna do Enxofre cave. A campervan keeps things flexible between island hops.
The ultimate Azores road trip spans roughly 600 km and 10–15 days, visiting every island from Santa Maria in the east to Corvo in the west. A motorhome provides a comfortable base as you experience whale watching off Pico, the red desert of Santa Maria, and the waterfalls of Flores.

Campsites across the Azores are spread over several islands, giving you the freedom to plan multi-island trips with reliable overnight options. Most sites cater to both campervans and motorhomes, offering electric hook-ups, fresh water points, and sanitary facilities including showers and toilets. You will find coastal sites with ocean views on São Miguel and Terceira, as well as quieter rural spots on the western islands of Flores and Faial. Booking ahead in summer is recommended, as pitches are limited on smaller islands.
The Azores have no motorways or toll roads, so driving a motorhome or campervan is straightforward and cost-free. Roads are generally well-maintained single or dual carriageway, with speed limits of 50 km/h in towns and 90 km/h on regional roads. Larger vehicles should take care on narrower mountain routes, particularly on smaller islands like Flores and Corvo. Fuel stations are available in main towns on each island, though it is wise to fill up before heading into rural areas. Signage follows standard Portuguese conventions, and roundabouts are common in larger settlements.

Fabio was a really great guest and left the camper van in perfect condition. He enjoyed His adventure exploring Ireland and we were delighted he hired one of our campervans.
We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
