Basilicata's main artery is the Basentana (RA5/E847), linking Potenza to Metaponto on the Ionian coast — it is toll-free, as are most roads in the region. The A3 motorway skirts the western edge near Lagonegro, where tolls apply and can be paid by cash or card at booths. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on dual carriageways and 100 km/h on motorways. Many secondary roads through the Lucanian Dolomites and Pollino are narrow and winding, so a campervan can be easier to handle than a larger vehicle on these stretches. Rest areas with services are less frequent than in northern Italy, so plan fuel stops in advance.
