The Basque Country's coastline stretches for over 250 kilometres along the Bay of Biscay, where dramatic cliffs meet sandy beaches and a culinary tradition boasting the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita in Europe. From the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao to the elegant La Concha Bay in San Sebastián, this compact region packs an extraordinary amount into a small area — the drive between those two cities is just 100 km. Inland, the Rioja Alavesa wine region offers rolling vineyards and medieval villages like Laguardia, while the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve provides a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The Basque Country is wonderfully suited to campervan travel: its well-maintained roads wind through green valleys and along coastal headlands, with distances between towns rarely exceeding an hour's drive. Head south from San Sebastián and within 80 km you reach the plains around Vitoria-Gasteiz, the region's leafy capital. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for navigating charming fishing villages like Getaria and Hondarribia, or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer family trip, Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across the Basque Country. This peer-to-peer approach means you can hire a vehicle that genuinely fits your plans, often at a better price than traditional agencies, and collect it right where your adventure begins.
The Basque Country is a rewarding destination from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring warm, settled weather ideal for exploring the coast by campervan, while September offers quieter roads and golden light over the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa. Summer is peak season, coinciding with events like the Semana Grande festival in Bilbao each August and the San Sebastián International Film Festival in late September. Booking your motorhome hire through Yescapa during the shoulder months can mean more competitive pricing from local owners, along with greater availability of vehicles across the Basque Country.

The Basque Country offers a good spread of campsites, from beachfront pitches along the Biscay coast to quieter inland sites near natural parks and vineyards. Most sites provide electrical hook-ups, fresh water points and waste disposal for both campervans and motorhomes. Facilities typically include hot showers, laundry areas and small on-site shops, and many coastal sites are open from Easter through to October. Booking ahead is recommended during the summer months to secure your preferred pitch in the Basque Country.
The Basque Country's main motorways — the AP-8 along the coast and the AP-1 heading south — are toll roads, payable by card or cash at barrier booths. Motorhomes over 3,500 kg are classed in a higher toll category, so keep your vehicle weight in mind. The general speed limit on motorways is 120 km/h for vehicles under 3,500 kg, reduced to 90 km/h for heavier motorhomes. Secondary roads through the valleys are well surfaced but can be narrow and winding, so allow extra time. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are spaced regularly along the AP-8.
