Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Bavaria

Bavaria — a region worth exploring

Bavaria is home to Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze, standing at 2,962 metres and accessible by cable car from the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This southern German region stretches from the Bavarian Alps along the Austrian border to the rolling hills and forests of Franconia in the north, offering an extraordinary range of landscapes for a road trip. From Munich to Nuremberg is roughly 170 km, while the drive from Füssen to Berchtesgaden covers around 260 km through some of the most rewarding alpine scenery in Europe. Along the way, you can visit Neuschwanstein Castle, the fairy-tale fortress near Füssen, explore the medieval walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, take a boat across the crystal-clear Königssee, or wander through the baroque gardens of the Residenz in Würzburg. Bavaria's roads are well maintained and suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes, though some alpine passes require a steady hand and careful planning. Lakeside stops, forest clearings, and well-equipped campsites make it easy to break up longer drives. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Bavaria — whether you want to start your trip in Munich, Augsburg, or Regensburg — giving you the flexibility to pick a vehicle that fits your group and your route perfectly.

Best time to visit

Bavaria is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring wildflower meadows and comfortable temperatures ideal for exploring by campervan. The Oktoberfest in Munich, running from mid-September to early October, is a major draw, so booking your motorhome hire early for that period is a smart move. In December, Christmas markets in Nuremberg and Munich create a magical atmosphere worth experiencing. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive pricing outside peak summer months, and shoulder seasons like May or September offer quieter roads and easier campsite availability across Bavaria.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Bavaria

Bavaria's motorways (Autobahn) are toll-free for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes, so most campervans and motorhomes travel without extra charges. Some stretches have no speed limit for cars, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 80 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes should generally keep to 120 km/h for safety. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along major routes like the A8 and A9. Alpine roads in southern Bavaria may have gradient warnings and tight bends, so check your vehicle's dimensions before heading into mountain passes.
