Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Calabria

Calabria — a region worth exploring

Calabria forms the toe of Italy's boot, with over 780 kilometres of coastline split between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. The region is home to the Pollino National Park, Italy's largest national park, which stretches across rugged peaks reaching 2,267 metres at Serra Dolcedorme. From the clifftop town of Tropea, perched above white sand beaches, to the ancient Riace Bronzes displayed at the National Museum of Magna Graecia in Reggio Calabria, there is a rich mix of nature and history to discover. The drive from Cosenza to Reggio Calabria covers roughly 260 km along the A2 motorway, while the coastal road from Tropea to Pizzo is just 30 km of winding seaside scenery. Calabria's landscape varies dramatically — from the forested highlands of the Sila plateau, dotted with glacial lakes, to the dramatic rock formations at Arco Magno near San Nicola Arcella. The roads are generally well-suited to both campervans and motorhomes, though some mountain routes require a bit of extra care. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Calabria, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel plans. Whether you want a compact campervan for the coast or a larger motorhome for a family tour, peer-to-peer hire means more choice and better value throughout the region.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in Calabria runs from May to October, when warm temperatures and long days make coastal and mountain routes equally enjoyable. In July, the Festa della Madonna della Consolazione draws crowds to Reggio Calabria, while the Peperoncino Festival in Diamante each September celebrates the region's famous chilli peppers. Summer is peak season, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa gives you the widest selection from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring Calabria's national parks without the summer bustle, and campsites across the region remain open well into October.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Calabria

Calabria's main motorway is the A2 (Autostrada del Mediterraneo), running from Salerno south to Reggio Calabria. It is toll-free for its entire length within the region, which is a welcome bonus for motorhome travellers. The general speed limit on motorways for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is 100 km/h, while on dual carriageways it drops to 80 km/h. Rest areas with fuel, food, and parking are spaced regularly along the A2. Some inland roads through the Sila and Aspromonte mountains are narrower, so take care with larger vehicles on tight bends.
