Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Campania

Campania — a region worth exploring

Campania's Amalfi Coast stretches across 50 kilometres of cliff-hugging road between Sorrento and Vietri sul Mare, recognised by UNESCO as a landscape of outstanding universal value. Beyond this famous coastline, the region holds layer upon layer of history and natural drama. The ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum sit in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, one of Europe's most closely monitored active volcanoes. Naples, the regional capital, is roughly 250 km south of Rome and just 55 km from the ancient Greek temples at Paestum, making Campania remarkably compact for a road trip. Inland, the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park covers more than 180,000 hectares of forested mountains, river gorges, and medieval hilltop villages — ideal terrain for those who enjoy quieter routes. The volcanic islands of Ischia and Procida sit in the Bay of Naples, reachable by ferry and well worth a day trip. Campania's roads range from wide motorways to narrow coastal lanes, so choosing the right vehicle matters. A campervan is perfect for winding seaside stretches, while a motorhome offers extra comfort on longer inland journeys. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire directly from local owners across Campania, giving you a wider choice of vehicles and often more flexible pick-up arrangements than traditional agencies. Whether you want to explore archaeological sites, coastal scenery, or mountain trails, Campania rewards the curious traveller at every turn.

Best time to visit

Campania is a year-round destination, though spring and autumn are especially rewarding for campervan travel. May brings the Maggio dei Monumenti festival in Naples, when churches, palaces, and courtyards normally closed to the public open their doors. September and October offer warm coastal days and the grape harvest across the Cilento hills. Summer is the peak season, so booking your campervan or motorhome early on Yescapa is a smart move — peer-to-peer pricing often undercuts traditional hire rates, even in July and August. Winter along the Campania coast stays mild, and you will find campsites quieter and roads far less busy.

The Cilento Ring

The Amalfi and Sorrento Coastal Drive

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Campania

Campania's main motorway is the A3 (Autostrada del Sole), connecting Naples southward to Salerno and beyond. Tolls apply on most motorways and can be paid by cash, card, or Telepass device at toll booths. Motorhomes and campervans over 3.5 tonnes are classed as heavy vehicles, with a motorway speed limit of 100 km/h rather than the standard 130 km/h for cars. On secondary roads the limit drops to 80 km/h for these larger vehicles. The coastal SS163 along the Amalfi Coast is narrow, with tight bends and seasonal restrictions for vehicles over a certain width — check local signage before setting off.
