Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Catalonia

Catalonia — a region worth exploring

Catalonia stretches across 32,000 square kilometres of northeastern Spain, where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean along more than 580 kilometres of coastline. From Barcelona's Sagrada Família to the volcanic landscape of the Garrotxa Natural Park, the region packs an extraordinary range of experiences into a compact area. The drive from Barcelona to the medieval town of Besalú is roughly 130 km, while the route south from Tarragona to the Ebro Delta — one of Europe's most important wetland habitats — covers about 85 km. Along the Costa Brava, narrow roads wind between coves and fishing villages such as Cadaqués and Tossa de Mar, making a campervan the ideal way to explore at your own pace. Inland, the Montserrat massif rises dramatically above the plains, and the Priorat wine country rewards those willing to navigate its winding lanes. Motorhome travellers will find well-maintained roads connecting the coast, the pre-Pyrenean foothills, and the high mountain passes of the Vall d'Aran. Whether you fancy a week on the beach or a fortnight crossing mountain cols, Catalonia delivers variety without long transfer drives. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the region — from campervans based near Girona to fully equipped motorhomes in the Barcelona area — giving you peer-to-peer flexibility and a genuine local welcome from the moment you collect your vehicle.

Best time to visit

Catalonia's hire season runs comfortably from April to October. Late spring is ideal for the Temps de Flors flower festival in Girona each May, when the old quarter fills with floral installations. September brings the grape harvest in Penedès and Priorat, plus Barcelona's enormous La Mercè festival around the 24th. Summer offers the longest days and warmest sea temperatures, so booking early through Yescapa is worthwhile — peer-to-peer pricing often undercuts traditional hire companies, especially outside July and August. Campsites along the Costa Brava and in the Pyrenees are open from Easter onward, and shoulder months mean quieter roads through Catalonia's mountain passes.

This 600 km route over 8–15 days links the rice paddies of the Ebro Delta to the high peaks around Aigüestortes National Park. Pass through Tarragona and Lleida, climbing into Catalonia's Pyrenean valleys. A motorhome with good clearance handles the mountain roads well.

350 km 5–8 days

Cover 350 km over 5–8 days crossing Catalonia's Pyrenees from the Vall d'Aran to Cap de Creus. Drive the N-260 through La Seu d'Urgell and Ripoll, with mountain campsites offering fresh air and spectacular views. Suitable for both motorhomes and campervans.

The Catalan Hinterland Loop

400 km 5–8 days

A 400 km circuit over 5–8 days exploring Catalonia's interior. Start in Vic, head to the medieval village of Rupit, cross the Garrotxa volcanic zone, then loop south through Solsona and Cardona. Motorhome service points are well spaced along the route.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Catalonia

Most of Catalonia's motorways (autopistes) are toll roads, including the AP-7 along the coast and the C-16 towards the Pyrenees. Tolls are paid at barriers by card or cash, and electronic Via-T tags are also accepted. Motorhomes and campervans over 3.5 tonnes fall into a higher toll category and face a general speed limit of 90 km/h on motorways, while vehicles under 3.5 tonnes may travel at 120 km/h. Rest areas with dedicated large-vehicle parking appear regularly on the AP-7 and AP-2. Mountain routes such as the N-260 through the Pyrenees include tight bends and altitude changes, so allow extra time.
