Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Central Switzerland

Central Switzerland — a region worth exploring

Central Switzerland is home to Lake Lucerne, a 114-square-kilometre body of water shaped by four distinct arms that connect six cantons and has served as the symbolic heart of the Swiss Confederation since 1291. The region stretches from the city of Lucerne southward to the Gotthard Pass, covering roughly 4,500 square kilometres of lakes, valleys, and alpine terrain. From Lucerne to Engelberg is about 35 km, while the drive from Brunnen to Andermatt covers approximately 55 km through dramatic mountain scenery. Key landmarks include the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne (Europe's oldest covered wooden bridge), Mount Pilatus at 2,128 metres, the revolving cable car up to Mount Titlis near Engelberg, and the Rütli Meadow on the shores of Lake Uri — the legendary birthplace of Switzerland. Travelling by campervan through Central Switzerland means winding along lakeside roads, crossing mountain passes, and stopping in small towns where each turn reveals a new perspective. The roads are well maintained but often narrow and curving, so a compact campervan can be ideal for the tighter alpine stretches, while a motorhome works well on the main valley routes. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Central Switzerland, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your route and group size — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and often more affordable than traditional hire companies.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in Central Switzerland is from May to October, when mountain passes are open and campsites operate at full capacity. June is particularly rewarding, with the Lucerne Festival in Summer running from mid-August into September for classical music lovers. The Alpabzug (alpine descent) celebrations in late September see decorated cattle returning from high pastures — a tradition unique to Swiss alpine regions. Book early for July and August, the most popular months, when Yescapa's peer-to-peer model gives you access to a broader choice of vehicles at varied price points. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and lower rates, ideal for a relaxed motorhome tour around the lakes.

Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (currently €42) for all vehicles using its national motorways, valid from December to January of the following year. In Central Switzerland, the A2 and A4 are the main motorways connecting Lucerne to the Gotthard region. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on open roads. Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits of 120 km/h on motorways. Mountain passes such as the Brünig and Gotthard may have seasonal restrictions or require snow chains in winter. Rest areas with motorhome-friendly facilities are well signposted along major routes.
