Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Colorado

Colorado — a region worth exploring

Colorado's Trail Ridge Road climbs to 3,713 metres above sea level, making it the highest continuous paved road in North America and a bucket-list drive for anyone touring by campervan. From the red-rock formations of Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs to the alpine meadows of Rocky Mountain National Park, the state packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into roughly 270,000 square kilometres. Denver to Durango is about 550 km, yet the scenery shifts from high plains to deep river canyons and snow-dusted peaks along the way. Head west from Denver and within 160 km you reach Glenwood Springs, home to one of the world's largest natural hot-spring pools — a welcome stop after a day on the road. Mesa Verde National Park protects over 5,000 archaeological sites, including ancient cliff dwellings that date back more than 700 years. Colorado's network of well-maintained highways and scenic byways makes it ideal for motorhome travel, with plenty of pull-offs, rest areas and campgrounds designed for larger vehicles. Whether you are winding through the San Juan Mountains or cruising beside the Arkansas River, the variety of terrain keeps every driving day interesting. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Colorado, choosing from a wide selection of vehicles to match your group size, budget and travel style — a peer-to-peer approach that often means more flexibility and better value than traditional options.

Best time to visit

Summer, from June to September, is the prime window for a campervan trip in Colorado, when Trail Ridge Road and most high-altitude passes are fully open. The Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June draws music lovers from across the country, while the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo each August offers a taste of local culture. Autumn brings golden aspen displays, particularly around late September. Spring and winter suit travellers who enjoy quieter roads and lower-elevation routes. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes shoulder-season hire more affordable, so booking a motorhome outside peak months can stretch your budget further.

The best road trips in Colorado

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Golden Circle Route

250 km 3–6 days

This 250 km loop from Denver takes in the former mining towns of Golden and Idaho Springs before climbing to Georgetown. Ideal for a campervan, the route follows clear mountain roads with well-spaced campgrounds. Allow 3–6 days to explore Colorado's Front Range foothills at a relaxed pace.

The Pikes Peak Loop

200 km 3–5 days

A 200 km circuit from Colorado Springs past the towering summit of Pikes Peak and through the charming town of Cripple Creek. The route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with several scenic pull-offs. Set aside 3–5 days to enjoy Garden of the Gods and the surrounding Colorado high country.

The San Juan Skyway

400 km 5–8 days

Covering 400 km through Colorado's San Juan Mountains, this loop links Durango, Silverton, Ouray and Telluride. Mountain passes reach over 3,300 metres, so a campervan handles the tighter bends well. Plan 5–8 days and book campsite pitches early in summer — this is one of the state's most popular drives.

The Grand Colorado Tour

900 km 10–15 days

At 900 km, this route loops from Denver through Rocky Mountain National Park, Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction and back via Colorado Springs. A motorhome gives you room to settle in for 10–15 days of varied terrain. Full-service campgrounds are plentiful along the way across Colorado.

The Western Slope Discovery

450 km 5–8 days

This 450 km route explores Colorado's western side, from Grand Junction through the Colorado National Monument and on to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Allow 5–8 days in your campervan to take in dramatic canyon views and riverside campsites near Delta and Montrose.

The Colorado Rockies Traverse

600 km 7–11 days

Stretching 600 km from Fort Collins south through Breckenridge and Salida to Great Sand Dunes National Park, this route crosses the heart of the Colorado Rockies. A motorhome works well on the broad valley highways. Budget 7–11 days and enjoy hot springs, alpine lakes and wide-open plains.

Colorado's interstate highways are toll-free, though the E-470 beltway around Denver and sections of I-25 near Denver use electronic tolling — you can pay via ExpressToll transponder or licence-plate billing. Speed limits for motorhomes and larger vehicles are generally 105 km/h on interstates and 90–105 km/h on rural highways, though mountain passes may post lower advisory speeds. Mountain corridors such as I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel have height restrictions of around 4.1 metres, so check your vehicle clearance before setting off. We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
