Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Corsica

Corsica — a region worth exploring

Corsica's GR20 trail stretches 180 km across the island's mountainous spine, widely regarded as one of Europe's most demanding long-distance hiking routes. Yet this French island in the Mediterranean offers far more than rugged peaks. From the citadel town of Bonifacio, perched on dramatic white limestone cliffs, to the red granite Calanques de Piana — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Corsica packs extraordinary variety into a compact space. The drive from Bastia in the north to Ajaccio, the island's capital and Napoleon's birthplace, covers roughly 150 km, while the coastal road from Porto-Vecchio to Bonifacio in the south is just 27 km of breathtaking shoreline. Corsica's interior is dominated by Monte Cinto, rising to 2,706 metres, and dense forests of Laricio pine that give way to sandy beaches along the coast. Narrow mountain roads and winding coastal stretches make a campervan ideal for exploring at your own pace, while compact motorhome options let you reach more remote spots with ease. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the island — whether you're collecting a vehicle in Ajaccio, Bastia, or Porto-Vecchio — giving you the flexibility to plan a route that suits your group and your budget.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip in Corsica, with warm temperatures and long daylight hours. June brings the Calvi on the Rocks music festival, a superb reason to head to the island's north-west coast. September and October offer quieter roads and comfortable weather, ideal for exploring mountain passes without the summer crowds. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find competitive hire prices outside peak July and August, when demand is highest. Book your motorhome or campervan early for summer, and consider shoulder-season dates for a more relaxed Corsica experience.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Corsica

Corsica has no motorway network; instead, the island relies on national and departmental roads. The main routes — the N193 from Bastia to Ajaccio and the N198 along the east coast — are toll-free. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on open roads and 110 km/h on dual carriageways, though most Corsican roads are single carriageway. Mountain roads, particularly the D84 through the Scala di Santa Regina gorge, can be narrow with tight bends, so take your time and use passing places. Rest areas with services are limited inland, so plan fuel and water stops in advance.
