Eastern Austria is home to the Danube's most celebrated stretch, the Wachau Valley, a 36-kilometre UNESCO World Heritage corridor of terraced vineyards and medieval abbeys between Melk and Krems. Beyond the capital, Vienna, the region fans out across Lower Austria and Burgenland, offering remarkably varied landscapes for a motorhome or campervan journey. From Vienna to Neusiedler See — Central Europe's largest steppe lake — is roughly 60 km, while the drive from Vienna north-west to the Wachau town of Dürnstein covers about 80 km. Landmarks such as Stift Melk, the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt, and the Nationalpark Donau-Auen give you a rich mix of culture, architecture, and nature. Flat Pannonian plains in Burgenland make driving easy for larger vehicles, while the gentle hills of the Weinviertel wine country reward slower exploration. Campervan-friendly service areas and well-maintained regional roads mean you can move between vineyard villages and lakeside campsites without hassle. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across eastern Austria, choosing from compact vans ideal for couples to spacious family vehicles — all at prices that reflect genuine community sharing rather than fleet-hire mark-ups.
May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through eastern Austria. The Wachau apricot blossom in April and early May signals the start of the season, while the Weinlesefest grape harvest festivals in Burgenland run through September and October. Summer brings warm days perfect for swimming in Neusiedler See and cycling the lake's flat circuit. Campsites across the region are fully open from May, and Yescapa owners often offer more flexible pricing outside the July–August peak, so hiring in June or September can be excellent value. Book ahead for the Vienna area during summer weekends.

Eastern Austria offers a fine spread of campsites, from Danube-side pitches in the Wachau to lakefront spots on Neusiedler See. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh-water fill points, and waste-disposal stations suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Many also feature on-site shops, playgrounds, and direct access to cycling paths, making them convenient bases for exploring the region's vineyards, thermal spas, and nature reserves.
Eastern Austria's motorways (Autobahnen) require a digital vignette, which you can purchase online before your trip. A 10-day vignette covers most needs. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes use the GO-Box toll system instead, charged per kilometre on motorways and expressways. The speed limit for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes is 130 km/h on motorways and 100 km/h on dual carriageways; vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 80 km/h outside built-up areas. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along the A1 and A4 corridors.
