Why hire a campervan or motorhome in England

England — a region worth exploring

England's coastline stretches over 3,000 kilometres, from the rugged cliffs of Cornwall to the wide sandy beaches of Northumberland, making it one of Europe's most rewarding destinations for a road trip. The Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers dramatic fells and tranquil waters, while the rolling hills of the Cotswolds sit roughly 145 km west of London, providing a gentler landscape of honey-coloured villages and winding lanes. Head north and you can drive from York to Whitby in about 75 km, crossing the North York Moors along the way. England's road network is well suited to both campervans and motorhomes, with a mix of motorways for covering distance quickly and quieter A-roads and B-roads that wind through countryside and along the coast. You will find well-maintained campsites in every corner of the country, from Devon's green valleys to the Northumberland coast near Hadrian's Wall. Whether you want to explore the historic university city of Cambridge, walk sections of the South West Coast Path, or visit the ancient stone circle at Castlerigg in the Lake District, a campervan gives you the flexibility to follow your own schedule. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a motorhome directly from local owners across England, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel style and budget.

Best time to visit

England is wonderful to explore from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and wildflower-lined lanes, ideal for a campervan trip through the countryside. Summer is peak season, so booking your hire on Yescapa early is a good idea — you will also find competitive peer-to-peer prices compared to traditional hire companies. The Appleby Horse Fair in early June draws visitors to Cumbria, while the Whitby Goth Weekend each October gives the Yorkshire coast a unique atmosphere. Autumn colours in the Lake District and Cotswolds make September and October especially rewarding for motorhome travel, with quieter campsites and mild temperatures across England.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in England

England's motorway network — including the M1, M5, and M6 — is toll-free apart from the M6 Toll near Birmingham, where you pay at the barrier. Motorhomes and campervans over 3,500 kg are classed as goods vehicles, with a national speed limit of 60 mph on dual carriageways and 50 mph on single carriageways. On motorways, the limit is 70 mph for vehicles under 3,050 kg unladen. Many A-roads in areas like Devon and the Lake District are narrow and winding, so plan routes carefully if you are driving a larger motorhome. Service stations with dedicated motorhome parking are available on major routes.
