Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Extremadura

Extremadura — a region worth exploring

Extremadura is home to Monfragüe National Park, one of only fifteen national parks in Spain, where colonies of black vultures — the largest in Europe — nest among quartzite crags above the River Tagus. This western Spanish region shares a long border with Portugal and stretches from the Sierra de Gata in the north to the dehesa woodlands of Tentudía in the south. The Roman ruins at Mérida, including a remarkably preserved theatre still used for performances, hold UNESCO World Heritage status, while the medieval old town of Cáceres is another UNESCO-listed site just 70 km to the north. From Plasencia to Badajoz, the drive covers roughly 280 km through rolling plains, cork-oak pastures, and vast reservoirs such as the Embalse de García de Sola. Roads are generally quiet and well-surfaced, making Extremadura especially rewarding for campervan and motorhome travel — you can cover ground at your own pace without heavy traffic. Cherry blossom season in the Jerte Valley draws visitors each spring, and the region's stargazing reserves offer some of the darkest skies in Europe. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Extremadura, choosing from a range of vehicles to suit your group and your route. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to explore a region where the open road truly delivers.

Best time to visit

Spring is a wonderful time to hire a campervan in Extremadura, particularly late March and April when the Jerte Valley cherry blossom festival (Fiesta del Cerezo en Flor) fills the hillsides with white blooms. Autumn, from September to November, brings comfortable temperatures and the WOMAD Cáceres world music festival in May is another highlight worth planning around. Summer suits those who love long daylight hours and warm evenings by the reservoirs. Campsites across Extremadura stay open year-round in many areas, and through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model you can often find competitive pricing outside peak months, making shoulder-season trips excellent value.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Extremadura

Extremadura's main motorways — the A-5 (Madrid to Badajoz) and the A-66 (Ruta de la Plata, Seville to Gijón) — are toll-free, which is great news for motorhome travellers. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,500 kg are typically 90 km/h on dual carriageways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles appear regularly along both routes. Secondary roads through the sierras can be narrower, so a campervan may be more comfortable than a large motorhome on mountain stretches. Fuel stations are well spaced in towns but less frequent in rural areas — plan fills accordingly.
