Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Friesland

Friesland — a region worth exploring

Friesland is the only Dutch province with its own officially recognised language — West Frisian — spoken by roughly 350,000 people alongside Dutch. Stretching from the Wadden Sea coast in the north to a patchwork of lakes in the south, the province offers a landscape shaped almost entirely by water. The Frisian Lakes district alone counts more than thirty interconnected lakes, making it one of Europe's premier inland waterway areas. From Leeuwarden, the provincial capital, it is roughly 55 km north-west to the harbour town of Harlingen, where ferries depart for the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland. Head south-east from Leeuwarden and within 60 km you reach Giethoorn, the car-free village often called the Dutch Venice. Along the way, the Alde Feanen National Park provides wetland trails and birdwatching hides, while the Sloten Cannon Gate and the historic Planetarium Eise Eisinga in nearby Franeker — the world's oldest working planetarium — add cultural depth to any itinerary. Roads across Friesland are flat and well-maintained, ideal for both campervans and larger motorhomes. Dyke-top routes along the IJsselmeer coast offer uninterrupted views, and most towns have dedicated motorhome service points. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Friesland, choosing from a wide range of vehicle types to suit your travel plans and budget.

Best time to visit

Friesland comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours and mild temperatures make touring by campervan a real pleasure. June is ideal for the Oerol Festival on Terschelling, a ten-day celebration of art, music and theatre set across the island's dunes and forests. In August, the famous Sneekweek sailing regatta draws visitors to Sneek and the surrounding lakes. Outside peak summer, April and October offer quieter roads and lower hire rates — a genuine advantage when booking through Yescapa, where peer-to-peer pricing often undercuts traditional operators. Campsites in Friesland generally open from late March through to the end of October, so plan accordingly.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Friesland

Friesland's road network is straightforward and well-suited to motorhome travel. The A7 and A32 motorways connect the province to the rest of the Netherlands, and there are no toll roads anywhere in the country. The national speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h during the day (06:00–19:00) and 120 or 130 km/h at night, though vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 80 km/h on all roads outside built-up areas. Provincial roads in Friesland are flat and wide enough for larger vehicles, but watch for narrow dyke roads along the coast where passing can be tight. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well signposted along major routes.
