In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the main motorway is the A4 (running east–west towards Trieste) and the A23 heading north to Tarvisio and the Austrian border. Both are toll roads; you pay at exit barriers using cash, card, or a Telepass device. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed in a higher toll category, so keep your vehicle weight in mind. The speed limit on motorways for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is 100 km/h, while those under 3.5 tonnes may travel at 130 km/h. Regional roads through the Carso plateau and the alpine valleys are well-surfaced but can be narrow and winding — a campervan is often easier to handle than a large motorhome on these stretches. Rest areas with services appear regularly along the A4 and A23.
