Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Grand Est

Grand Est — a region worth exploring

Grand Est is home to the oldest Christmas markets in France, with Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik dating back to 1570 and drawing over two million visitors each year. The region stretches from the Vosges Mountains in the south to the rolling Ardennes hills in the north, offering a remarkable variety of landscapes for touring by campervan or motorhome. From Strasbourg to Reims, the distance is roughly 330 km, taking you through vineyard-covered slopes, dense forests, and historic canal-side towns. Heading south from Colmar to Gérardmer — about 65 km — you climb into the Vosges, where winding mountain roads open up to panoramic lake views. Key landmarks include the Gothic splendour of Strasbourg Cathedral, the fortified old town of Langres, the Champagne cellars of Épernay, and the Place Stanislas in Nancy, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The region's well-maintained network of smaller departmental roads makes it ideal for campervan travel, with plenty of aires and stopovers spread across Alsace, Lorraine, and Champagne. Whether you fancy a slow meander through the Alsatian Wine Route or a longer loop through the Meuse valley, Grand Est rewards those who take their time. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across the region — from compact campervans perfect for vineyard lanes to larger motorhomes suited to family adventures — giving you flexibility and a genuine peer-to-peer experience.

Best time to visit

Grand Est is wonderful from late spring through to autumn, with May to September offering the warmest weather and longest days for campervan touring. The Foire aux Vins d'Alsace in Colmar each July is a fantastic excuse to explore the wine route, while the Fête de la Mirabelle in Metz every August celebrates Lorraine's famous golden plum. Summer is peak season, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa gives you the widest choice and the best peer-to-peer rates from local owners. Autumn brings the grape harvest and quieter roads through Grand Est, ideal for a more relaxed pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Grand Est

Grand Est is well connected by autoroutes, many of which are toll roads — the A4 (Paris–Strasbourg) and A26 are key routes. Tolls are paid at booths by card or cash, and costs vary by vehicle weight, so check your motorhome's category before setting off. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads. Rest areas with motorhome-friendly parking are plentiful along major routes. In the Vosges, mountain passes such as the Col de la Schlucht may require extra care in winter, so plan accordingly.
