Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Hesse

Hesse — a region worth exploring

Hesse is home to the Bergstraße, one of Germany's oldest tourist routes, stretching roughly 80 km from Darmstadt to Heidelberg through orchards and vineyards that bloom as early as March. The region spans from the forested peaks of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve in the north-east to the Rhine wine terraces of the Rheingau in the south-west, giving you a remarkable variety of landscapes to explore by road. Frankfurt am Main, Hesse's largest city, sits almost centrally, making it a practical starting point — Kassel is about 200 km to the north, while Wiesbaden lies just 40 km to the west. Along the way you can visit the Hercules monument in Kassel's Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or follow the winding Lahn Valley past the medieval old town of Marburg. The Edersee, one of Germany's largest reservoirs, is surrounded by the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, where dense beech forests offer superb walking and cycling. For campervan travellers, Hesse's well-maintained B-roads and plentiful stellplätze make it easy to move between cities and countryside at your own pace. A motorhome gives you the freedom to linger in the Taunus hills or press on to the half-timbered villages of northern Hesse without worrying about hotel availability. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to suit your group and your route.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Hesse. The Rheingau Wine Festival in Wiesbaden runs each August, offering open-air tastings right along the Rhine, while the Kassel documenta (held every five years, next in 2027) draws art lovers from across Europe. Summer campsites are well staffed and fully open, and the Taunus and Rhön highlands stay pleasantly warm for hiking. Autumn brings grape harvest season along the Bergstraße and quieter roads throughout the region. Booking through Yescapa outside peak July–August lets you benefit from more competitive hire prices set by local owners, and you will find pitches easier to secure at popular spots like Edersee.

Germany's motorways (Autobahn) are toll-free for all vehicles, including motorhomes and campervans, so you can travel through Hesse without any road charges. Many Autobahn stretches in Hesse have no general speed limit for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits where posted. The A5 and A7 are the main north–south corridors through the region, while the A3 crosses east–west near Frankfurt. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well spaced along these routes.
