The Scottish Highlands contain Britain's highest peak, Ben Nevis, standing at 1,345 metres above sea level and drawing hillwalkers from across the globe. This vast region stretches from the dramatic shores of Loch Ness — over 36 km long and famously deep — to the rugged peninsulas of Wester Ross and the sweeping moorlands of Caithness in the far north. From Inverness to Fort William is roughly 105 km along the Great Glen, while the journey from Inverness north to Durness covers approximately 160 km of single-track roads and open landscapes. The Cairngorms National Park offers ancient Caledonian pine forests and red deer herds, and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Jacobite steam train, is one of Scotland's most photographed landmarks. Driving through the Highlands means navigating winding single-track roads with passing places, crossing high mountain passes, and following coastlines where sea lochs cut deep into the land. It is a region built for slow, unhurried travel — exactly the kind of journey a campervan or motorhome makes possible. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Highlands region, choosing from a wide range of campervans and motorhomes to suit your group size and travel style. Whether you want a compact campervan for narrow Highland roads or a fully equipped motorhome for longer adventures, the peer-to-peer model means more choice and better value.
The Highlands are at their most inviting from May to September, when daylight stretches well past 10 pm and campsites across the region are fully open. The Inverness Highland Games, held each July, offer a brilliant window into local culture with caber tossing and pipe bands. Autumn brings rich colour to the glens, and the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival in late April or early May is a fine reason to plan a spring trip. Booking your campervan through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means lower hire prices thanks to flexible peer-to-peer pricing, and you will find quieter roads and more available pitches at popular stops along the way.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow the 250 km route along the Great Glen from Inverness to Fort William, passing Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal. Ideal for campervans on well-surfaced roads, with plenty of lochside stops and the Highlands' most iconic scenery. Allow 3–6 days.
This 200 km loop takes you from Kyle of Lochalsh across the Skye Bridge to Portree and the Old Man of Storr. Single-track roads suit smaller campervans best. Give yourself 3–6 days to enjoy the Highlands' most dramatic island landscapes.
A 350 km circuit through the Cairngorms National Park and Speyside whisky country, taking in Aviemore, Grantown-on-Spey, and the Lecht Pass. Suits both motorhomes and campervans, with well-equipped campsites throughout. Plan 5–8 days for this Highlands loop.
Cover 450 km along the Highlands' east coast from Inverness through Dornoch and Wick to John o' Groats. Enjoy wide roads, sandy beaches, and historic castles like Dunrobin. A comfortable motorhome route with good campsite access. Allow 5–8 days.
Scotland's famous 830 km loop starts and ends in Inverness, circling the Highlands' entire northern coastline. Pass through Applecross, Durness, and Thurso. Best in a campervan for narrow western stretches. Allow 7–15 days to do it justice.
This 600 km route winds through the western Highlands from Fort William to Ullapool via Glencoe, Torridon, and Gairloch. Single-track roads and remote campsites reward those in a well-stocked campervan or motorhome. Set aside 8–13 days.

The Highlands offer a wonderful variety of campsites, from sheltered lochside pitches to coastal spots with views across the Atlantic. Whether you are travelling in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome, you will find sites with electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal, and shower blocks. Campsites are spread right across the region — from the Cairngorms in the east to the remote north-west coast — so you are never far from a good overnight stop on your Highlands adventure.
The Highlands have no toll roads, so you can travel freely without worrying about charges. Most major routes like the A9 and A82 are well-maintained dual or single carriageways, but many rural roads are single-track with passing places — patience and courtesy are essential. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Fuel stations can be sparse in remote areas such as the north-west coast, so fill up when you can. Watch for height restrictions on older bridges and plan your route if you are driving a larger motorhome.
