Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Liguria

Liguria — a region worth exploring

Liguria's coastline stretches for roughly 350 kilometres along the Italian Riviera, curving from the French border at Ventimiglia to the marble quarries of Carrara in the east. The region is famously home to the Cinque Terre, five clifftop villages connected by footpaths and a scenic railway, and to the grand port city of Genoa, birthplace of Christopher Columbus and home to one of Europe's largest aquariums. From Genoa to Portofino is just 36 kilometres, yet the winding coastal road passes through a landscape that shifts from urban harbour to forested promontory in minutes. Head west and you can drive roughly 150 kilometres from Savona to Sanremo, passing through flower-growing towns and sandy beaches along the Riviera dei Fiori. Inland, the Aveto Regional Natural Park offers dense beech forests and mountain meadows that feel a world away from the busy shore. Travelling by campervan or motorhome gives you the freedom to combine seaside mornings with mountain afternoons, stopping wherever the road invites you. Narrow stretches of the Via Aurelia and steep village lanes do reward drivers who choose a compact campervan, though larger vehicles are well catered for on the A10 and A12 motorways. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire directly from local owners across Liguria, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match the route you have in mind.

Best time to visit

Liguria enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, making it a rewarding destination from spring right through to autumn. May and June are ideal for a campervan trip along the coast — wildflowers are in bloom and campsites have good availability. The Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, held in Genoa every four years (next in 2027), is a spectacle worth planning around, while the Sanremo Music Festival each February fills the western Riviera with energy. July and August are the busiest months, so booking your Yescapa motorhome hire early is a smart move to secure the best choice from local owners. September and October bring warm seas and quieter roads, perfect for exploring Liguria at a relaxed pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Liguria

Liguria's main motorways are the A10 (Genoa to Ventimiglia) and the A12 (Genoa to La Spezia), both of which are toll roads. You can pay tolls by cash, card, or Telepass device at each barrier. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on dual carriageways. Be aware that Ligurian motorways feature many tunnels and viaducts — some tunnels are several kilometres long, so keep headlights on and maintain a safe following distance. Height restrictions in older tunnels occasionally apply to vehicles over 4 metres, so check your route in advance. Rest areas with motorhome service points are spaced regularly along both the A10 and A12.
