Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Lower Saxony

Lower Saxony — a region worth exploring

Lower Saxony's Lüneburg Heath stretches across 23,000 hectares, making it one of the largest heathland nature reserves in Central Europe and a remarkable landscape to explore by road. The region spans from the North Sea coast and the East Frisian Islands in the north to the Harz Mountains in the south, offering an extraordinary range of scenery within a single German state. From Hanover to the coastal town of Norddeich is roughly 290 km, while the drive from Göttingen in the south to Cuxhaven on the coast covers around 340 km — distances that feel perfectly suited to a campervan or motorhome journey. Along the way, you can visit the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover, wander through the half-timbered old town of Celle, take in the Wadden Sea National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), or hike the dramatic Brocken summit trails near the Harz border. Lower Saxony's roads wind through flat marshlands, rolling farmland, and forested uplands, with well-maintained routes that welcome larger vehicles. Coastal stretches offer wide horizons and easy parking, while the southern hills provide rewarding scenic drives. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Lower Saxony, choosing from a wide selection of campervans and motorhomes to match your travel style and group size — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and flexible.

Best time to visit

Lower Saxony is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. The Lüneburg Heath blooms a vivid purple from August to September, drawing visitors from across Europe. If you prefer coastal adventures, June and July bring the warmest weather to the East Frisian Islands and the Wadden Sea. The Maschseefest in Hanover, typically held in late July and early August, is one of northern Germany's largest lakeside festivals. Booking your campervan through Yescapa outside peak summer months can offer better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing, while spring and early autumn reward you with quieter roads and golden landscapes across Lower Saxony.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Lower Saxony

Lower Saxony has an extensive motorway network, including the A1, A2, and A7, which are toll-free for all vehicles. However, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes must observe a speed limit of 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Lighter campervans under 3.5 tonnes may use the advisory speed of 130 km/h on unrestricted sections. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points are well distributed along major routes. Some coastal roads in East Frisia are narrower, so plan your route if you are driving a larger vehicle. Low-emission zones apply in Hanover and other cities — check your vehicle's emission sticker before entering.
