Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Montana

Montana — a region worth exploring

Montana's Going-to-the-Sun Road stretches 80 km through Glacier National Park, climbing over 2,000 metres at Logan Pass — one of the most remarkable alpine drives in North America. From the vast plains of the east to the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains in the west, Montana covers an area larger than Germany, offering an extraordinary range of landscapes for a road trip. The 460 km drive from Missoula to Billings crosses the Continental Divide and passes through the wide-open Deer Lodge Valley, while the 290 km route from Great Falls to Glacier National Park follows the Rocky Mountain Front, a dramatic wall of peaks rising from the prairie. Yellowstone National Park's north entrance at Gardiner gives you access to geysers, hot springs, and wildlife-rich valleys like the Lamar Valley, often called the Serengeti of North America. Montana's uncrowded highways and generous pull-off areas make it ideal for campervan and motorhome travel, with long stretches of open road and well-maintained rest stops. Whether you want to fish the blue-ribbon trout waters of the Madison River or explore the historic mining town of Butte, there is always something worth stopping for. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Montana, giving you a wider choice of vehicles and a more personal start to your adventure.

Best time to visit

Montana's prime touring season runs from June to September, when Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is fully open — typically from late June. July brings the famous Montana Folk Festival in Butte, a free three-day music event drawing thousands. August and September offer warm days, cooler evenings, and thinner crowds at campsites across the state. Booking a campervan through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform during shoulder months like June or September often means better availability and more competitive hire rates from local owners. Plan ahead for July and August if you want the widest choice of motorhomes and pitches.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Montana

Montana has no toll roads, so you can travel freely across the state without worrying about fees. Interstate highways such as I-90 and I-15 are the main arteries, both well-suited to motorhomes and campervans. The general speed limit on interstates is 80 mph (around 130 km/h) for cars, but larger vehicles over 8,000 kg may be subject to lower posted limits on certain stretches. Mountain passes like those on US-93 and Going-to-the-Sun Road have vehicle length restrictions — vehicles over 6.4 metres (21 feet) are not permitted on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Rest areas with overnight parking are spaced regularly along major routes.
