Why hire a campervan or motorhome in New York State

New York State — a region worth exploring

New York State stretches over 141,000 square kilometres, from the Atlantic shores of Long Island to the wild peaks of the Adirondack Park — the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States at over 24,000 square kilometres. The landscape shifts dramatically as you travel: from the vineyard-lined shores of the Finger Lakes to the thundering cascades of Niagara Falls, roughly 530 km west of New York City. Head north from Albany to Lake Placid, a drive of about 220 km, and you will find yourself winding through dense forest and past mirror-still lakes ideal for overnight stops in a campervan. The Catskill Mountains offer quieter roads and well-spaced campsites, while the Thousand Islands region along the St Lawrence River provides a unique waterside touring experience for motorhome travellers. Beyond the cities, New York State rewards those who take their time — the Taconic State Parkway, the shores of Lake George, and the gorges around Ithaca all deserve a place on your itinerary. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners spread right across the state, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle close to where your adventure begins and explore at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Late May through to October is the prime window for a campervan trip in New York State. Autumn is especially rewarding — the Adirondack leaf-peeping season typically peaks in late September and early October, drawing visitors from across the globe. Summer brings festivals such as the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse each August, a tradition running since 1841. Campsites across the state are generally open from May to mid-October, so booking through Yescapa during shoulder months like June or September can offer better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer hire rates. Spring wildflowers in the Hudson Valley add another reason to set off early in the season.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in New York State

New York State's highway network includes the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90), a toll road running roughly 900 km from New York City to Buffalo. Tolls are collected electronically via E-ZPass or by post through Tolls by Mail — there are no cash booths. Speed limits on major motorways are typically 105 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes should observe posted truck limits, usually 90–95 km/h. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are well distributed along the Thruway. Mountain roads in the Adirondacks and Catskills can be narrower, so plan your route if you are driving a wider motorhome.
