Piedmont is home to over 50 kilometres of UNESCO-listed vineyard landscapes in the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato hills, making it one of Italy's most rewarding regions to explore at your own pace. Nestled in the northwest corner of the country, Piedmont shares borders with France and Switzerland, and its terrain ranges from the snow-dusted peaks of the Gran Paradiso massif to the gentle shores of Lake Maggiore. Turin, the elegant regional capital, sits roughly 150 km from the lakeside town of Stresa, while the wine country around Alba is about 60 km south of Turin — both distances that feel effortless when you have your own wheels. Beyond the cities, you can wander through the Sacra di San Michele perched above the Susa Valley, follow the rice paddies of the Vercelli plain, or take in the dramatic Orta San Giulio island on Lake Orta. The roads here are well-maintained and varied, with wide valley routes ideal for a motorhome and winding hill roads that suit a nimble campervan. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Piedmont, choosing from a broad range of campervans and motorhomes to match your group size and travel style. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and often more affordable than traditional hire.
Piedmont is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm days perfect for driving the alpine foothills, and campsites across the region are fully open. The International Alba White Truffle Fair, running from October into November, is a brilliant reason to visit in autumn — the Langhe hills glow with colour and the roads are quieter. Summer is peak season, so booking your campervan on Yescapa early is a smart move; peer-to-peer pricing often undercuts traditional hire, especially outside July and August. Winter opens up ski routes near Sestriere and Bardonecchia for those with a well-equipped motorhome.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 180 km loop winds through Piedmont's UNESCO-listed vineyard hills. Start in Alba, pass through Barolo and Barbaresco, and explore the Roero sandy ridges. Ideal for a campervan, with plenty of agriturismos and small campsites along the route.
A 150 km circuit linking Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta in northern Piedmont. Visit Stresa, take in the Borromean Islands, then cross to the quieter shores of Orta San Giulio. Lakeside campsites welcome both campervans and motorhomes.
Covering 350 km across Piedmont's western mountains, this route links Susa Valley to the Gran Paradiso National Park via Ceresole Reale. Mountain passes are well-surfaced and open from June to October. A motorhome-friendly adventure with scenic rest stops throughout.
A 400 km journey through Piedmont's rolling Monferrato hills. From Asti, head to Casale Monferrato and Acqui Terme, sampling local wines and thermal springs. Roads are gentle and well-suited to larger vehicles, with campsites dotted between hilltop villages.
This 550 km route connects Piedmont's Savoy heritage sites. Begin in Turin at the Palazzo Reale, drive to the Reggia di Venaria, then loop through Racconigi and Stupinigi. Allow 7–11 days to enjoy palaces, parks, and the surrounding campervan-friendly countryside.
At 600 km, this comprehensive loop covers the best of Piedmont — from Turin's boulevards to Lake Maggiore, across the rice plains of Vercelli, and down through the Langhe vineyards. Plan 10–15 days and mix motorhome-ready motorways with quieter country roads.

Piedmont offers a varied selection of campsites spread from the alpine valleys in the west to the lakeshores in the east. Whether you are travelling in a compact campervan or a full-size motorhome, you will find pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh water, and waste disposal facilities. Many sites in the Langhe wine country and around the lakes also provide Wi-Fi, on-site restaurants, and swimming pools, making them comfortable bases for exploring Piedmont at a relaxed pace.
Piedmont's motorway network centres on the A4 (Turin–Milan) and the A6 (Turin–Savona), both of which are toll roads. You pay at exit barriers using cash, card, or a Telepass device. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher tolls, so check your vehicle weight before setting off. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on dual carriageways and 100 km/h on motorways, compared to 130 km/h for cars. Mountain stretches such as the A32 towards the Fréjus Tunnel include long gradients and tunnels with height restrictions — confirm your motorhome's dimensions in advance.
