Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Region of Murcia

Region of Murcia — a region worth exploring

The Region of Murcia is home to Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, the Mar Menor, a 135-square-kilometre coastal lake separated from the Mediterranean by the narrow La Manga sandbar. This corner of south-eastern Spain packs remarkable variety into a compact area: the historic port city of Cartagena, with its Roman Theatre and Modernist architecture, sits just 75 km from the medieval town of Caravaca de la Cruz, one of only five Holy Cities in the Catholic world. Inland, the Sierra Espuña Natural Park offers forested mountain trails that climb above 1,500 metres, while the Ricote Valley — often called the last Moorish stronghold in Iberia — winds through terraced orchards and whitewashed villages. From the coast at Águilas to the north-western highlands around Moratalla, the distance is roughly 160 km, yet the landscape shifts from arid badlands to pine-covered sierras along the way. Roads are generally well-maintained and uncrowded, making the region ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome at your own pace. Murcia city itself is a lively base with excellent local cuisine, and smaller towns offer quieter overnight spots. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the Region of Murcia, choosing from a range of vehicles to suit your group and your route — a flexible, peer-to-peer way to discover this sun-drenched region on four wheels.

Best time to visit

The Region of Murcia enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, so a campervan trip works well in almost any season. Spring is especially rewarding: the Fiestas de Primavera in Murcia city each April fill the streets with parades and flower floats. Autumn brings the Carthagineses y Romanos festival in Cartagena each September, a spectacular re-enactment of ancient battles. Summer is peak season along the coast, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa gives you the best choice from local owners. Winter remains mild, with daytime temperatures often above 15°C — ideal for hiking in Sierra Espuña or exploring inland towns without the crowds. Whenever you visit, the Region of Murcia rewards a slower pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Region of Murcia

Most motorways in the Region of Murcia are toll-free, including the A-30 linking Murcia city to Cartagena and the A-7 running along the coast. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on conventional roads — lower than for cars, so keep an eye on signage. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are spaced regularly along the main routes. Some mountain roads in the Sierra Espuña and north-western highlands are narrower, so a campervan can be more manoeuvrable than a large motorhome on these stretches. Fuel stations are plentiful across the region.
