The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Rome's Colosseum, completed in 80 AD, could hold up to 80,000 spectators — making it the largest amphitheatre ever built. Today, the city draws millions of visitors each year, and exploring it by campervan or motorhome gives you the freedom to combine iconic landmarks with the quieter countryside beyond the city walls. Wander through the Roman Forum, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, and take in the vast collections at the Vatican Museums before heading to the Borghese Gallery for Bernini's masterful sculptures. Rome sits on the Tiber River in the Lazio region, with the Tyrrhenian coast just 30 km to the west and the medieval hilltop town of Tivoli only 35 km to the east. The surrounding roads are well-maintained, though the historic centre has a restricted traffic zone (ZTL) that larger vehicles should avoid. Parking outside the ZTL and using public transport into the centre is a practical approach. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner in the Rome area, which often means helpful tips on the best routes, quieter overnight spots, and a more personal welcome than you would get from a traditional hire company. Whether you are planning a week-long tour of Lazio or using Rome as a launchpad for a longer Italian road trip, having your own set of wheels — and your own bed — makes all the difference.
Rome is a rewarding destination in every season. Spring (April–May) is ideal for campervan touring, with comfortable temperatures and events like the Rome Marathon in March and Natale di Roma celebrations on 21 April. Summer brings long daylight hours, perfect for evening strolls through Trastevere. Autumn is excellent for exploring nearby wine country during harvest season. Book your motorhome hire on Yescapa well ahead for peak months (June–September), when peer-to-peer pricing can help you find better value than traditional hire outlets. Winter visitors enjoy shorter queues at major sites and festive Christmas markets around Piazza Navona.
Rome is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Just 30 km south-west of Rome, Ostia Antica is a beautifully preserved Roman port town. Explore the ancient theatre, the Thermopolium, and the House of Diana before driving to the nearby Lido di Ostia for a seaside lunch. Campervan parking is available close to the archaeological site entrance.
Head 70 km south-east of Rome along the coast to Sperlonga, a whitewashed village perched above the sea. Visit the Grotto of Tiberius and the National Archaeological Museum, then relax on the sandy beaches. Several campsites nearby offer full hook-ups for your motorhome.
Drive 130 km north of Rome into Umbria to reach Orvieto, set atop a dramatic volcanic plateau. Marvel at the Gothic Duomo di Orvieto and descend into the Pozzo di San Patrizio. Stop in Civita di Bagnoregio along the way. Designated campervan parking is available below the old town.
Travel 185 km north-east of Rome into the Apennines to reach Abruzzo National Park. Hike through beech forests, spot Marsican brown bears, and visit the charming town of Pescasseroli. Campsites within the park welcome campervans and offer electric hook-ups and fresh water.
The 275 km drive north from Rome to Florence follows the A1 motorway through rolling Tuscan hills. Stop in Orvieto or Montepulciano en route. In Florence, visit the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio. Park your motorhome at designated areas outside the ZTL for easy access.
Head 280 km south-east of Rome to the Amalfi Coast. Wind along the SS163 through Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, enjoying dramatic clifftop views. The road is narrow, so a compact campervan is recommended. Arrive early to secure parking in the smaller coastal villages.

Rome and its surroundings offer a good selection of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most are located on the city's outskirts, connected to the centre by bus or metro, and provide serviced pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal, showers, and Wi-Fi. Several sites also feature swimming pools and on-site restaurants, making them comfortable bases for exploring Rome at your own pace.
Rome's historic centre is covered by a ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato), which restricts vehicle access — including motorhomes and campervans — during set hours. Fines for entering without a permit are steep, so park outside the ZTL and use public transport to reach the centre. Several large car parks on the city's outskirts accept oversized vehicles and offer metro or bus connections. Overnight parking in public areas is generally not permitted for motorhomes unless at a designated sosta or campsite.
