Saarland is Germany's smallest federal state by area, yet it packs in a remarkable concentration of natural and cultural landmarks along its 251 km border with France and Luxembourg. The iconic Saarschleife, a dramatic horseshoe bend of the River Saar near Mettlach, is one of Germany's most photographed natural features and a superb spot to park up and take in the view. From Saarbrücken, the lively capital, it is roughly 70 km north-west to the Bostalsee lake — a popular stop for swimming and waterside camping — and about 80 km east to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau, where orchid meadows and beech forests reward slower exploration. The Völklinger Hütte, a UNESCO World Heritage ironworks just outside Saarbrücken, offers a fascinating window into the region's industrial past, while the Celtic hillfort at Otzenhausen, known as the Hunnenring, dates back over two thousand years. Compact distances make Saarland ideal for campervan and motorhome travel; you can cross the entire state in well under two hours, yet find enough variety to fill a week or more. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Saarland, choosing from a range of vehicle types to suit your group and your route.
May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Saarland. The Saarland Festspiele, a summer theatre festival held in Saarbrücken each June and July, is well worth timing your visit around, while the Emmes street festival in September fills the capital with live music and local food. Campsites across the region are fully open from April through to late October, with lakeside pitches at Bostalsee and Losheim especially popular in July and August — booking a few days ahead is a good idea. Hiring through Yescapa in the shoulder months of May or September often means more competitive pricing from local owners and quieter roads through the Bliesgau reserve.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 500 km loop over 7–11 days covers the full breadth of Saarland, from Saarbrücken through the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, north to Bostalsee, west to the Saarschleife, and back via Völklingen. Ideal for a motorhome with plenty of campsites along the way.
A compact 120 km route over 3–5 days linking Mettlach's famous Saarschleife viewpoint with the forested hills of the Hochwald. Perfect for a campervan, with quiet roads and well-equipped pitches at Losheim am See.
Covering 90 km in 3–6 days, this gentle Saarland route winds through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau. Stop at Blieskastel's baroque old town and the orchid meadows near Gersheim — a relaxed campervan trip with rural camping options.
This 180 km route over 4–7 days pairs Saarland's industrial landmarks — Völklinger Hütte and the coal mines at Göttelborn — with green valleys around Quierschied and St. Ingbert. Suits both campervans and motorhomes on well-surfaced roads.
A 300 km, 5–8 day loop crossing from Saarland into the Moselle valley. Start in Merzig, follow the Saar north to Nennig's Roman mosaic villa, then return through the vineyards near Perl. Motorhome-friendly roads throughout.
Spanning 350 km over 6–9 days, this Saarland route traces the borders with France and Luxembourg. Visit Sarreguemines across the French line, loop through Schengen in Luxembourg, and return via the Warndt forest. A memorable cross-border campervan adventure.

Saarland offers a good spread of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes, from lakeside parks in the north to quieter rural spots near the French border. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower and toilet blocks, fresh water points, and dedicated motorhome service areas for waste disposal. Several larger parks around the Bostalsee and Losheim lakes also feature swimming access, playgrounds, and on-site restaurants.
Saarland's motorways — the A1, A6, A8 and A620 — are toll-free for all vehicles, in line with Germany's current rules for cars and motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must register for the Lkw-Maut toll system and pay per kilometre on motorways and some federal roads. Speed limits for motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes follow standard car rules, but those over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 80 km/h on motorways and 60 km/h on rural roads. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well signposted along the A1 and A6 corridors.
