Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Saxony

Saxony — a region worth exploring

Saxony is home to the Bastei Bridge, a sandstone arch perched 194 metres above the Elbe River in Saxon Switzerland National Park, drawing visitors from across Europe to one of Germany's most dramatic natural landmarks. The region stretches from the vibrant city of Dresden, with its rebuilt Frauenkirche and world-class Zwinger Palace, eastward to the charming town of Görlitz on the Polish border — a drive of roughly 115 km. Head west and you will reach Leipzig, famous for its Thomaskirche where Bach served as cantor, approximately 120 km from Dresden along the A4 motorway. Between these cultural centres, Saxony unfolds with forested highlands in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains), tranquil lake districts near Leipzig, and the rolling farmland of Upper Lusatia. The roads are well maintained and suit both compact campervans and larger motorhomes, with plenty of designated overnight stops along the way. Whether you are keen to explore Meissen's porcelain heritage or paddle through the Spreewald's waterways just beyond the northern border, Saxony rewards slow, flexible travel. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Saxony. The Dresden Music Festival runs each May and June, filling the city with concerts in historic venues, while the Leipzig Christmas Market — one of Germany's oldest, dating back to 1458 — transforms the city centre from late November. Summer brings long daylight hours ideal for hiking in Saxon Switzerland, and most campsites across the region operate from April through to October. Book early for July and August, the busiest months. Shoulder months like May or September offer quieter roads and comfortable temperatures. On Yescapa, peer-to-peer hire often means more competitive pricing outside peak weeks.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Saxony

Saxony's motorways — the A4 (east–west) and A14 (north–south) — are toll-free for all vehicles, as Germany does not charge tolls for cars or motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must register for the Lkw-Maut system. On the Autobahn, there is no general speed limit for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes to 130 km/h (advisory). Secondary roads through the Erzgebirge and Saxon Switzerland feature tighter bends and gradients, so allow extra time if you are driving a larger motorhome. Rest areas with services appear regularly along the A4 and A14.
