Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Southern Austria

Southern Austria — a region worth exploring

Southern Austria's Großglockner High Alpine Road climbs to 2,504 metres, making it the highest surfaced mountain pass road in the country and one of Europe's most rewarding drives for motorhome and campervan travellers. The region stretches across Carinthia, Styria and parts of Burgenland, linking alpine peaks with warm bathing lakes, rolling vineyards and thermal spa towns. From Klagenfurt on the shores of Wörthersee to Graz — Austria's second-largest city — the distance is roughly 150 km, an easy day's drive with plenty of stops along the way. Head south-east from Graz and within 80 km you reach the gentle hills of the South Styrian Wine Road, where family-run Buschenschänken serve local wines beside the vines. Carinthia alone counts more than 200 lakes, many warm enough for swimming from June to September, including Millstätter See and Klopeiner See. The Nockberge Biosphere Reserve, Riegersburg Castle and the medieval old town of Friesach all reward a slower pace of exploration. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across southern Austria, so you can choose the vehicle that fits your group — from a compact campervan for two to a fully equipped motorhome for the whole family. With pick-up points spread across the region, planning a flexible road trip through southern Austria could not be simpler.

Best time to visit

Southern Austria is wonderful from late spring right through to autumn. May and June bring wildflower meadows and uncrowded campsites, while July and August are ideal for lake swimming and festivals such as the Carinthischer Sommer music festival in Ossiach. September and October reward campervan travellers with the Styrian grape harvest and golden larch forests across the Nockberge. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices outside peak summer, so booking a motorhome for a shoulder-season trip through southern Austria can be especially good value. Whichever month you choose, plan your route early to secure the best vehicle.
