The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Split's Diocletian's Palace, built around 305 AD for the Roman Emperor Diocletian, remains one of the best-preserved ancient Roman structures in the world and forms the living heart of the city centre. This Croatian coastal city sits along the Adriatic Sea, backed by the Mosor mountain range, making it a brilliant base for exploring Dalmatia by road. Wander through the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use, or take in panoramic views from the Marjan Hill forest park on the western peninsula. The Riva waterfront promenade stretches along the harbour and is ideal for an evening stroll. Beyond the city, Krka National Park lies roughly 85 km to the north-west, while the charming town of Trogir is just 27 km along the coast. The roads around Split are well-maintained and suited to larger vehicles, though the old town itself is pedestrianised. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across the Split region, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle nearby and set off at your own pace. With a campervan, you can follow the Adriatic coastline or head inland towards the mountains — Split is the kind of place that rewards those who linger and explore.
Split is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm, comfortable temperatures ideal for driving the Dalmatian coast in a campervan. The Split Summer Festival (Splitsko ljeto) runs from mid-July to mid-August, filling the city with open-air theatre, opera, and concerts inside Diocletian's Palace. September and October offer quieter roads and pleasant weather for motorhome touring. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months often means more choice from local owners and better hire rates. Plan ahead for July and August, as it is the most popular season along the Adriatic.
Split is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 27 km west from Split along the coastal D8 road to the UNESCO-listed old town of Trogir. Stop at Kaštela to explore its seven historic castles along the bay. Trogir's compact island centre is easy to walk, and campervan parking is available near the town bridge. A perfect day trip or relaxed overnight.
Drive 60 km south-east from Split along the Adriatic highway to Makarska, nestled beneath the dramatic Biokovo mountain range. Pause at Omiš to see the Cetina River canyon. Makarska's long pebble beach and harbourside restaurants make it a great stop, with motorhome-friendly campsites dotted along the Riviera.
Cover 155 km north-west from Split to Zadar, following the A1 motorway or the scenic coastal route. Visit Primošten's hilltop old town and Šibenik's St James's Cathedral en route. In Zadar, don't miss the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation. Campervan pitches are plentiful near Zadar's Borik area.
Travel 180 km south-east from Split to Dubrovnik along the stunning Adriatic coast. Stop at the Makarska Riviera and the walled town of Ston, famous for its oysters. Dubrovnik's old city walls are unmissable. Larger motorhomes should note the narrow approach roads — use designated parking outside the walls.
Head 240 km north-west from Split to Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's most celebrated natural wonder. The route passes through Sinj and the rural Lika region. Walk the park's wooden boardwalks over turquoise cascading lakes. Campervan overnight spots are available at campsites near Entrance 1 and Entrance 2.
Journey 390 km north-west from Split to the Istrian peninsula, a region of hilltop villages, vineyards, and Roman ruins. Stop at Zadar and Rijeka along the way. The Split area offers a fine selection of seaside campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites along this stretch of the Dalmatian coast provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal points, showers, and toilets. Several are positioned right on the waterfront, giving you direct beach access. Whether you prefer a site within walking distance of Split's old town or a quieter spot along the coast towards Omiš or Trogir, you will find well-maintained pitches with good facilities.
Parking a motorhome or campervan in Split requires a bit of planning, as the old town is fully pedestrianised. Several larger car parks on the outskirts accommodate bigger vehicles. Overnight parking in public areas is generally not permitted, so it is best to use a campsite or designated area. Always check height and length restrictions before entering any car park, and pay attention to signage for vehicle size limits.
