Why hire a campervan or motorhome in State of Berlin

State of Berlin — a region worth exploring

Berlin is the only city in Europe that has more bridges than Venice — over 1,700 in total — making it a surprisingly water-rich destination for campervan and motorhome travel. The River Spree winds through the heart of the city, connecting landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall at 1.3 km. From Alexanderplatz to Schloss Charlottenburg, the distance is roughly 10 km, giving you a sense of how spread out Berlin's attractions are. Head south-east and within 35 km you reach the Müggelsee, Berlin's largest lake, surrounded by forest trails ideal for a quiet overnight stop. The Grunewald forest on the western edge offers another escape, with cycling paths and lakeside spots at Wannsee. Berlin's flat terrain and well-maintained roads make it easy to navigate in a larger motorhome, while the city's outer districts provide ample space for parking and exploring at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Berlin, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to suit your trip — whether you want a compact campervan for city-fringe exploring or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer adventure through the surrounding Brandenburg countryside.

Best time to visit

Berlin comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours make it easy to explore by campervan. June is especially rewarding, with the Fête de la Musique on 21 June filling streets and parks with free live music. In October, the Festival of Lights transforms landmarks like the Berlin Cathedral and Brandenburg Gate with spectacular illuminations. Campsites around Berlin tend to be busiest in July and August, so booking a few days ahead is worthwhile. Outside peak summer, Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices, and you will find greater vehicle availability in spring and autumn — both excellent seasons for cycling the city's lakeside paths.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in State of Berlin

Berlin sits at the junction of several major Autobahn routes, including the A10 ring road (Berliner Ring) that circles the city. Germany's motorways are toll-free for campervans and motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes, though vehicles over 7.5 tonnes require a toll box. There is no general speed limit on many Autobahn stretches, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes should follow posted limits, typically 120–130 km/h. Rest areas with services appear regularly along the A10, A13, and A24. Within Berlin, watch for low-emission zone (Umweltzone) rules — you will need a green sticker to drive in the city centre.
