Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Ticino

Ticino — a region worth exploring

Ticino is the only Swiss canton where Italian is the sole official language, giving it a Mediterranean character quite unlike the rest of Switzerland. Stretching from the high Alpine passes around the St Gotthard down to the shores of Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore, the region packs dramatic contrasts into a compact area — Bellinzona to Lugano is just 30 km, yet the landscape shifts from medieval fortress towns to palm-lined lakeside promenades. The three UNESCO-listed Castles of Bellinzona guard the entrance to the canton, while the stone-built villages of the Verzasca Valley draw visitors to the famous Ponte dei Salti, a double-arched bridge over crystal-clear pools. From Locarno's sun-drenched Piazza Grande, home to one of Europe's top film festivals, you can ride the Centovalli Railway through a hundred valleys of chestnut forests and waterfalls. Further south, the Monte San Giorgio fossil site near Mendrisio offers a geological record spanning 240 million years. Travelling by campervan lets you move freely between lakeside stops and mountain retreats, while a motorhome gives families the space to settle in at well-equipped sites along the shores. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire directly from local owners across Ticino, choosing from a wide range of vehicles that suit both weekend escapes and longer tours through this Italian-speaking corner of Switzerland.

Best time to visit

Ticino enjoys the mildest climate in Switzerland, making it a rewarding destination from spring right through to autumn. The Locarno Film Festival in August fills the Piazza Grande with open-air screenings, so booking your campervan early for that month is a good idea. April to June brings wildflower-covered hillsides and quieter campsites, ideal for exploring at your own pace. September and October offer warm days, harvest festivals, and golden chestnut forests across the valleys. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer hire often means more competitive pricing outside peak summer, giving you great flexibility for a Ticino road trip.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Ticino

Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40) for all vehicles using national roads, including motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Heavier motorhomes pay distance-based tolls via an electronic system. The A2 motorway runs through Ticino from the Gotthard Tunnel to Chiasso at the Italian border. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on open roads. The Gotthard Tunnel has single-bore traffic, so expect queues during holiday weekends — consider the San Bernardino Pass as an alternative route in summer.
