Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Utrecht

Utrecht — a region worth exploring

Utrecht province spans just 1,449 square kilometres, making it the smallest province in the Netherlands, yet it packs in a remarkable variety of landscapes and history. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a forested ridge of glacial hills stretching roughly 50 km from Amersfoort to Rhenen, offers some of the country's most rewarding cycling and walking trails — a refreshing change from the flat polders most visitors expect. In the provincial capital, the 112-metre Domtoren has dominated the skyline since 1382 and remains the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. From Utrecht city, it is only about 25 km east to the woodlands of Kasteel de Haar near Haarzuilens, one of the largest castles in the country, and around 55 km south-east to the historic fortress town of Wijk bij Duurstede on the Rhine. The province sits at the crossroads of the Dutch motorway network, so reaching neighbouring regions is straightforward whether you are driving a compact campervan or a larger motorhome. Smaller roads through the Vechtstreek and Loosdrecht Lakes area are well-suited to campervans and reward slower exploration. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire directly from local owners across Utrecht province, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel style and budget.

Best time to visit

Late spring through early autumn — May to September — is the prime window for a campervan trip through Utrecht province. The Utrecht Early Music Festival in late August and early September draws visitors from across Europe to the city's medieval churches and concert halls. King's Day on 27 April transforms Utrecht's canals into a lively open-air celebration well worth timing your trip around. Campsites across the province are fully open from April, and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug forests are at their finest in May and June. Booking through Yescapa outside peak July–August weeks can mean more competitive hire rates from local owners, giving you greater flexibility for a relaxed regional tour.
